My Approach

My approach is essentially Humanistic, Integrative and Body-Oriented. For me, it is inconceivable not to include the person's body, along with their mind and their essential spirit. I was trained originally with Gerda Boyesen and by David Boadella, and I have, for both of these, a great appreciation. However, my moment-to-moment way of working has also been influenced by working in psychiatric settings, in departments of Clinical Psychology, in GP practices, in community and residential settings, and with people in prison, in psychiatric wards, as well as in crisis and spiritual emergencies.

About Me

I have 40 years of clinical experience as a psychotherapist, in a number of different settings, working with various modalities (Body Psychotherapy, Humanistic, Transpersonal, CBT, etc), with individuals, couples, adolescents and also with people in spiritual crises.
I have just retired (Aug. 2023) from working as a Counsellor in the NHS in Scotland. However, I still have a separate private psychotherapy practice. I am also trained and qualified to give counselling supervision.
I work both in Edinburgh and in the Scottish Borders, though increasingly online (Skype, Zoom, telephone)I have a long-standing interest in, and of working with, people in crisis and spiritual emergency processes

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety is often the result of almost overwhelming stress. This doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with the person, and they often haven't done anything wrong, but ... this has happened, then that happened, and then that, and that and ... how many things can you carry? And how do you feel when they start to drop? This is when anxiety really kicks in and makes things worse. Anxiety can also be learnt in childhood if everyone else - especially those adults around one - is anxious.
Depression is a bummer. It can kick in - or you can fall into it - for a large number of reasons, and then it sticks around and is often very hard to get rid of. Anti-depressants can help to lift the mood slightly, but they don't get you out of the sticky mud. However, there are a number of simple self-help strategies and changes in perception that can get you out of that depressive state reasonably quickly.
I authored a book "Help Yourself Towards Mental Health" (Karnac, 2010), as well as "First Contacts with People in Crisis & Spiritual Emergencies" (AuthorHouse, 2011) and have since been writing articles and editing books and journals all towards helping people improve their mental health. Full details are on my website.
I also work with people in spiritual crisis and emergencies.
I am particularly interested in helping clients to dissolve long-held traumas and PTSD and with people in crisis.
