My Approach

I am an experienced Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist specialising in work with complex trauma; including recovery from childhood sexual abuse, traumatic grief, attachment and trauma work. I work collaboratively with children, young people and their families and integrate creative and play-based approaches into therapy, often working with parents and children together, as well as offering individual adult/child and family work. In addition to my core clinical training, I am trained in a number of specific trauma and attachment focused therapies, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) - a powerful therapy for processing intrusive trauma memories; DDP (Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy) - an attachment based therapy for parents and children/young people; Theraplay - a playful attachment based therapy; and NVR (Non-Violent Resistance Therapeutic Parenting). I can also offer specialist assessments of attachment and caregiving, including the Child Attachment and Play Assessment and the Meaning of the Child parental interview.

About Me

I have worked in pioneering third sector services with vulnerable children and young people for over twenty years. During this time, I have come to specialise in work with children and young people who have experienced significant sexual abuse and developmental trauma including clinical leadership of two specialist attachment and trauma services from 2018 - 2023. I have a particularly good track record in working with hard to reach children and young people and I am known for forming strong and collaborative relationships with the children, families and supervisees I work with.

I am now the co-founder of a specialist psychotherapy service for children and families in North Leeds called Leeds Centre for Attachment and Trauma (LCAT). I offer individual and trauma-focussed work with children and adults, local authority and adoption services through LCAT. More information on the service and how to refer can be found here: https://www.leedscat.org/

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I specialise in work with complex trauma and abuse, including attachment needs, sexual abuse and developmental trauma. I also offer EMDR (a trauma-focussed therapy) to both children and adults
I work using a 'whole family' frame, often working not only with children and young people, but their parents/ carers and siblings too.
I have specialist expertise in the field of child sexual abuse and sexual trauma, having worked in this area for over 14 years. My particular interests are in helping children/ teens recover from the effects of child sexual abuse through trauma-focussed work and by strengthening the attachment relationship with non-abusing parents/carers. I am also interested in the intergenerational legacy of sexual abuse in families.
I have both personal and professional experience of issues of suicide and traumatic grief. When confronted with these issues, it is often helpful to find professionals who understand the complex differences between bereavement and loss and the (more often than not) traumatic nature of suicide grief.
