My Approach

My focus is to help individuals, couples and families move forward with hope and positivity. This is achieved through uncovering their inner strengths and positive values and beliefs. I utilise a range of research-based approaches and offer a 'light' touch to help with what may be perceived as 'heavy' problems. I am able to work with multiple complex dynamics and have experience and enjoy working with difference. I take a sensitive and understanding approach to my work, which has helped get positive outcomes in a short space of time. I am not one to spend years keeping clients in therapy. I want clients to become self-reliant, resilient and foresee a hopeful future, which is always achievable with a bit of motivation and work.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have spent many years working with individuals with addiction issues. Generally in my expereince there is a core reason for addiction and so systemic psychotherapy in my view is a successful approach to helping people tackle this difficulty. Through gently exploring the past and utilising some tools to help uncover previous events (both positive and negative) is the starting point to better understanding one's addiction. The idea is to build on positive values and beliefs and to explore the emotions that are also driving the addiction to help build a fuller and more positive understanding of one's self. There are often other mental health or biological difficulties within the dynamic, which I am able to help explore with clients. I can also offer some practical methods to help maintain abstinence, so essence to help people develop a tool box for self intervention.
I am currenlty completing a certificate in emotionally focussed couples therapy that offers a complete approach to help couples work on their particular difficulties. I have worked with couples and families for many years and this has included a range of diffiuclties that include addiction, bereavement, loss, infidelity and disability (both parental and with children within the home).
I have expereince working with families on a range of difficulties that can include parental or child problems. The work can be completed with individuals or multiple family members, but this often incorporates a mix of family dynamics over the course of the work. I have also worked with adoption difficulites, which often has a loss of a sense of identity at the core. Along with fostering breakdowns and special guardianship problems. The idea of a family is unique to each person and group, so I take an active interest in learning about your family expereinces and together working out a solution to the problem
I have worked with adoption and fostering difficulties where a loss of a sense of identity is at the core. Also, within parental break up, divorce and within a loss of relationships people can often be left with a sense of losing themselves. Through the work of mapping events and uncovering stories we can together help you re-connect to yourself and who you are. This helps build confidence and self-esteem that enables individuals visualise a more positive future.
I have worked with all types of mental helath difficulties over the years within various services and age groups. Anxiety is extremely prevelent within our society, which is hardly surprising given the pressures individuals and families are under. I have helped people gain the skills and self confidence to overcome significant anxiety along with depression and other psychological difficulties. I utilise a range of approaches that includes uncovering positive values within past stories and helping a re-connection to the self. I also use a DBT approach that encourages lifestyle changes and provodes a 'tool kit' to take action against negative emotions.
