Systemic therapy is an approach to psychotherapy, which focuses on systems. This is, it aims to think about the interactions, patterns and communication between individuals in their meaningful relationships and how we influence and make sense of these. This can be done individually or in different combinations (couples, families, subsystems in a family).
Rather than focussing on a ‘problem’ being located in one person, systemic therapy thinks about how difficulties, including physical and mental illnesses, life changes/experiences, and worries have an impact on how we relate to those around us and how we respond to each other. When facing difficulties, families and individuals often feel their strengths become overshadowed by worries or ‘stuck patterns’. Through family therapy or a systemic approach, we aim to create understanding and use family/individual strengths to work through challenging times. Meetings happen in a collaborative way, thinking flexibly together about what helps, doesn’t help and how to find ways forward together that fit for a ‘system’ or individual.
In an initial meeting we aim to think about what your hopes and goals are and possible ways we can work towards these. Following this, we can agree to set up 4-5 sessions and then review if the sessions are moving in the right direction. Ongoing sessions can be set up in this way until it is felt the goals have been achieved or a more hoped for situation is experienced.
