My Approach

As a person centred therapist, my focus will always centre on you as a person, and on what you need from your therapy sessions. I place a great deal of importance on the therapeutic relationship, and I want you to feel safe, and comfortable to express what you need and how you feel. I value feedback and will always do all I can to respond to your individual needs.

I like to offer creative approaches to self expression and self exploration, and I have materials available to incorporate art, craftwork, creative writing and journalling into your therapeutic journey if this is something you would like to include.
I draw on a variety of theories and modalities to find the approach which fits best for each individual client. I believe that each person I work with is individual in their own unique way and endeavour to provide a respectful, inclusive environment where all orientations, lifestyle choices and expressions of identity are welcome.

About Me

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have a good deal of experience of working with individuals addressing specific issues around loss, grief and bereavement. My previous experience includes several years of providing one to one therapy within a specialist hospice based setting, giving support to those who have been bereaved, those who have a loved one with a life limiting illness and those who are living with a life limiting diagnosis themselves. I am familiar with a number of different "grief models" and approaches to bereavement, and my experience includes working with those who have been bereaved in a traumatic manner, for example losing a loved one to suicide or in unusual or traumatic circumstances. I have attended specific training on working with bereavement and grief models and continue to build my portfolio in this area.
I have significant relevant experience of working with individuals who have experienced, or may still be experiencing, domestic abuse - this includes coercive control, emotional abuse, financial abuse and sexual abuse and is not limited to physical abuse. I believe I have a deep insight into the complex dynamics of an abusive relationship and understand the many complicated issues which may keep someone trapped in the cycle of domestic abuse and struggling to "see the wood for the trees". I also understand that a person may have experienced domestic abuse in some form in several relationships and contexts, and that domestic abuse is something that can affect anyone. I offer a safe, non judgemental space to explore and unravel the often confusing aspects of difficult relationships that may include aspects of domestic abuse, and the opportunity to clarify choices and options and explore these without pressure.
Within my work I have been privileged to encounter and be alongside a number of individuals at varying stages on the journey of healing from the experience of sexual abuse - this includes those who have experienced prolonged sexual abuse as a child or adult and those who have perhaps experienced an isolated event of sexual abuse as an adult. I have deep compassion and respect for the level of courage and tenacity it takes to address the complex layers of trauma, anger, misplaced guilt and shame attached to being a survivor of sexual abuse. One of my primary goals when working with survivors of sexual abuse is to support them to reach a place not only of self acceptance and self compassion but also to arrive at a place where they are able to honour what they did to survive and ultimately to begin the journey toward thriving. I believe wholeheartedly in the possibility of reaching the point of ascending one's trauma to reach a place of greater peace, fulfilment and post traumatic growth. I have accessed specific training and learning materials on the subject of sexual abuse and continue to build my portfolio in this area.
I have worked with many individuals who experience suicidal thoughts and feelings, who have attempted suicide or self harmed, or may be still self harming, and also with a number of people who have lost a loved one to suicide. As part of my training and through my personal choice I have attended specific training and completed further reading and research around the subject of suicide and self harm. I offer a safe and non judgemental space to speak openly about these thoughts, feelings and actions, to explore what they mean to the individual and what triggers them, and to look for safe ways to acknowledge and manage these issues. I believe that talking openly about self harm and suicide without fear of judgement is the first step toward understanding these powerful and often frightening thoughts, urges and actions, and beginning to find ways to manage them and their impact. I have attended and accessed specific training and materials in this area and will continue to build my portfolio going forward.
I have in-depth experience of working with individuals affected by trauma in a number of ways. This may be P.T.S.D or complex P.T.S.D, living with the legacy of childhood trauma including abuse, neglect, traumatic loss and/or issues arising from the family of origin, or it may be related to a specific event in adulthood, such as a rape or assualt, traumatic bereavement, major accident or life changing event (for example) or in other cases it may be that an individual is living with cumulative trauma arising from an ongoing chronically stressful or distressing situation. I have a particular passion for the concept of a transformative journey from trauma and its' effects through to post traumatic growth, thriving and finding peace in a meaningful, fulfilled life. I have studied up to date interpretations of the effects of trauma on the nervous system (such as polyvagal theory), which I can utilise to help clients understand how their body and nervous system responded to the traumatic events, how experiences such as panic attacks, anxiety, flashbacks and dissociation come about and how to manage them. I have attended specific post graduate training on the subject of trauma and continue to build my portfolio in this area.
