My Approach

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a creative and flexible way of understanding deep-rooted issues which you may feel are holding you back from living a more productive life. Of course there is no magic formula, however the ability to talk in complete openness and confidentiality and to start to understand why you might be stuck in certain patterns can help to move things forward.

Whether you come as an individual or a couple, I aim to build a trusting relationship in which the difficulties you bring can be explored in a non-judgmental setting. While the psychodynamic approach takes account of your past experiences and relationships there may be times when we focus mainly on the here-and-now. I find that longer term work is often more effective in facilitating lasting change however I am also experienced in short-term work and we can discuss which Is most appropriate for you.

In psychodynamic couple therapy the relationship is the patient. We will think about what you have co-created in your relationship rather than either person being at fault. There may be an atmosphere of blame and hurt, however in the non-judgmental space of the session couples can begin to listen to one another again and to start to see how they might be recreating certain destructive patterns.

I am accredited by the BPC (British Psychoanalytic Council) and the UKCP (The UK Council for Psychotherapy) and abide by the Codes of Ethics of these organisations.

About Me

As a couple and individual psychodynamic psychotherapist with fully accredited trainings in both fields, I bring a breadth of experience to my practice. I have worked for over a decade in private practice and in charitable settings as well as in the NHS. My original in-depth training as an individual psychodynamic psychotherapist was at WPF Therapy followed by a highly specialised training in working with couples at the Tavistock Centre. Alongside my private practice I have worked for several years in the Parenting Service of Tavistock Relationships (TR), one of the foremost providers of couple therapy in the UK. I have contributed a chapter to a TR book “Couples as Parents” (2024:Routledge). I enjoy working with a wide variety of people from different backgrounds and cultures.

I have a BA and an MSc in the Humanities. My previous career was as a reporter and producer working in international affairs.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I work with adoptive couples who may be thinking about adopting or already have an adopted child or children. The adoption process can feel stressful and couples may be in different places about whether they want to adopt. While having an adopted child or children can be very rewarding there can also be considerable strains on you as parents and as a couple and talking about these in therapy can help you to process some of this together.
I work with a wide variety of issues that couples bring including all aspects of starting a family and family life, infertility, frequent rows, lack of sex, bereavement of one or both partners, depression, infidelity, illness and issues around empty-nesting and retirement. We will focus on the relationship and what you have co-created, rather than either one of you being at fault.
I am experienced in working with couples who are having difficulties conceiving and who may be having fertility treatment. This can feel very stressful and at times shaming and couples can feel isolated from friends and family. The couple relationship also comes under stress when sex becomes about conception rather than enjoyment. Couples can find this a helpful time to have a supportive space to explore what they are feeling.
I work with a variety of relationships including couples, siblings and parent-child relationships. I provide a non-judgmental space for you to start to move past some of the blockages or difficulties between you. Sometimes you may only need to meet for a few sessions while for some it may be more beneficial to work longer term.
I offer low cost supervision for trainee and newly qualified counsellors and psychotherapists. My approach is supportive and collaborative and the focus is on helping you to develop your own style and way of working while drawing on the framework offered by psychodynamic theory and practice.
