About Me

I run a full time practice in Salisbury, Wiltshire along with my husband Stewart Mustard. I am a fully qualified Hypnotherapist, Psychotherapist, Counsellor and Life Coach. I have been in practice for over 25 years and so you can be confident that you are consulting a highly experienced professional. Through my career, I gained extensive experience in the field of mental health: working within Social Services, National Health Service & voluntary sector.

In addition to my general psychotherapy practice, I am the founder and director of easibirthing® and parenting. As part of easibirthing® and parenting, I support women and their partners with Hypnosis and Psychotherapy for Fertility, Pregnancy, Tokophobia, Childbirth, Birth Trauma, Post Natal Mental Health & Parenting Support.
The easibirthing® hypnobirthing model had been specifically designed, in consultation with midwives, to reflect birthing methods in the UK.
I also teach professional courses for hypnotherapists, psychotherapists, counsellors and psychotherapeutic counsellors throughout the UK at live events and within the ‘easibirthing® Fertility for Parenthood' CPD LIVE and ONLINE training school’ for any professionals working with or have an interest in working with parents or expectant parents to help restore and maintain positive mental and emotional health. The 'easibirthing® Fertility to Parenthood' model in fertility, childbirth & post natal mental health is accredited by the ‘National College of Hypnosis Psychotherapy & Mindfulness (nchp)’ to train qualified Hypnotherapists and Hypnotists and throughout the world to specialise in these areas. As an accredited member of the 'UK Council for Psychotherapy', a fellow of the ‘National Society of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy’, and the 'Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council', I am required to abide by their Code of Ethics and Practice. This includes undertaking regular supervision, having appropriate professional insurance and being committed to continued professional development. I am also registered with The United Kingdom Confederation of Hypnotherapy Organisations (UKCHO). I am also a BUPA and AXA healthcare registered consultant for private health insurance clients.

I also have the UKCP 'child and adolescent proficiency marker' which accredits me for working with children and adolescents. From January 2012 I have ran the counselling service for Godolphin Boarding and day school for girls in Salisbury Wiltshire. I see children and teenagers from age 8-18. As a result of psychosocial development and increasing maturity, teenagers can feel over-sensitive and lack self-confidence as they come to terms with the changes they are going through. Mood swings and shyness are some of the most common features associated with adolescence. It is a period of vulnerability which requires support and understanding. Indiividuals in this age group may come to see me for psychotherapy because of difficult experiences they’ve been going through, such as family relationships, stress leading up to exams, illness or a bereavement. Or they may want help dealing with feelings of sadness, loss of confidence, anxiety or low self-worth that don’t seem to be connected to any particular event. Therapy can help them make sense of their feelings and behaviour.

I became a fully qualified Life Coach in 2004. Being a therapist as well as a coach means that I already understand the underlying processes of interaction, human development and blocks to progress. In 2005 I undertook my advanced Hypnotherapist training ( S to the third power Hypnotherapy ) with UK Academy of Therapeutic Arts and Sciences, and also became a certified specialist in working with depression.

I am also an honourary fellow of the 'National Society for Hypnosis, Psychotherapy and Mindfulness'. In 2019 I became the first ever recipient of the 'Brookhouse and Biddle award for contribution to hypnosis and psychotherapy'. In addition I am the appointed practitioner for South Wiltshire and West Hampshire within the 'Brookhouse Hypnotherapy Group'.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety Anxiety is part of normal human experience and can be felt at different levels. Some people experience it in mild forms such as when facing a stressful situation like a job interview or speaking in public, where it can help us to focus on the task at hand and be more diligent and then recede without leaving a lasting impression. Others may experience it in a more severe form such as anxiety disorders which can have a major and lasting impact, disrupting an individual's normal quality of life. Anxiety may occur in response to a traumatic event or by what we think happened and fear reoccurring. Experiencing severe anxiety can lead to avoiding certain situations or environments for fear of triggering the anxiety. This can then have a knock-on effect on relationships and careers. Clients come to see me for generalised anxiety disorder , social anxiety , phobias and fears , panic attacks , trauma OR post traumatic stress disorder , obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) , Stress , Stress related IBS
The word depression is often used to describe the feeling of being sad or fed up which are a normal reaction to stressful or challenging situations. These feelings can last for a week or two, but then recede without having a lasting affect on your life. However, with true depression, the individual experiences low mood and other symptoms such as disturbed sleep, fatigue, change in appetite, poor concentration, restlessness, irritability, feelings of worthlessness, helplessness, with the symptoms interfering with day to day activities. It is thought that as many as 10% of the population may be suffering with depression to some extent. Very often, you may no idea why you feel so low and may feel too embarrassed to seek help, hoping that the feelings will recede at some time. This probably means that you suffer for longer that need be. We can help to identify and gain insight into the underlying causes of your depression and help to change your perception of the cause and release any unwanted emotion. We can also help you to regain control of the situation by recognising and understand inappropriate or unhelpful responses and habitual behaviours and by identifying more beneficial coping strategies including teaching relaxation and visualisation techniques. We see clients for major depression , dysthymic disorder , Bipolar disorder , Post Natal depression
Once a couple/woman decides to try for a baby, all too soon as the months pass it can become all encompassing, all consuming, often obsessive. You can find it difficult to focus on other aspects of your life. If month after month it continues not to happen-both of you can experience feeling detached and isolated from the world, a profound sense of sadness, scared of ‘what this might mean’. It is all about time-time seems to be running out. The uncomfortable reality is that there is a window of opportunity-a limited optimum fertile period in our lives. The mind has enormous power over the body, which is constantly influenced by our emotions, thoughts and beliefs. There are many factors responsible for infertility, and our emotions can affect the delicately balanced hormonal system, which in turn controls ovulation, sperm production and pregnancy. The focus of my work tends to not just about hopefully getting pregnant, but also about helping my male AND female client to re-establish control over their lives. It may be dealing with the emotional toll of the experience of infertility. The goals for therapy are adapted to you as an individual, but may include: Pursuing fertility treatment without feeling as if your life and body have been taken over Reduce stress so enhancing chance of conceiving either naturally or with ART Assist you in recognising that you have a life outside of infertility Regain a sense of control over your life Develop communication channels with your partner so that you focus on making decisions that are best for both of you
We all face challenges to our mental health at some time, whether it is the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship or redundancy. How we react to change and loss depends upon many different factors-and for some can mean a period of mental ill health. It takes time to adjust to change and we can experience many different emotions including deep sadness, anger, denial, helplessness and guilt, before hopefully moving on to acceptance of the situation. However, on occasions we can get 'stuck' in one emotional state; finding it impossible to move on. It is at this point that you may need some help to work through your feelings and make some sense of what has happened. We can help with gaining new perspectives on the issues you face and, where necessary, uncovering and exploring the causes. We can help you to rediscover self belief and increase confidence in your ability to manage change positively; learning more beneficial coping strategies.
Experiencing a traumatic or frightening event can trigger feelings of extreme anxiety which may persist for months or even years. This reaction is known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and is believed to effect as many as 30% of people who have experienced a traumatic event. PTSD is most closely associated with veterans who have served in conflict situations, but can be a result of any frightening incident such as car a crash, physical or psychological assault or natural disaster. Sufferers may relive the event as 'flashbacks' or nightmares and experience sleep problems, depression, mood swings and feel emotionally numb or detached from themselves and others. It can also lead to alcohol or drug dependancy and may result in avoidance of situations, places or even people associated with the trauma. In most cases, symptoms of PTSD occur within 3 months of the event, however, in some cases the condition does not become apparent until much later, possibly many years after the incident.
