I am a cognitive analytic therapist. CAT is a medium term, time limited relational therapy which has collaboration at the heart of the model. CAT is practiced widely across the NHS in a variety of settings. I like CAT as a model for therapy as it offers balance. There is some structure which helps keep a focus but there is also flexibility allowing the work to be suited to each individual and their unique situation. There is a balance between working in the ‘here and now ’looking at the main stresses currently in a persons life and taking a developmental perspective, trying to understand how a person has arrived at this place where they are in difficulty. There is a focus on how we relate to others (and why) and how we relate to ourselves (and why). For further information see www.ACAT.org.uk
I have worked in mental health services for 25 years. I initially trained as a doctor and through working in psychiatry developed an interest in psychological therapies. I trained first in London where I became qualified as a psychotherapist. I completed my training in Yorkshire. I have worked in some excellent specialist services, a service for people with HIV, a psychosexual clinic and a team for homeless adults in London and a trauma service and chronic fatigue service in Yorkshire. I have also worked in generic community services for adults. I qualified as a psychotherapist in 2000 and subsequently qualified as a supervisor for fellow therapists in 2005. I worked in the NHS until 2010 since when I have developed my independent psychotherapy service.
Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.
