My Approach

My approach to therapy is integrative and relational. By integrative, I mean that I draw on a range of psychotherapeutic, psychological and psychosocial theory to aid our shared understanding of the issues that you bring to therapy. I believe that this approach is most responsive to the uniqueness of each client – one model of therapy does not fit all. I work collaboratively, combining multiple therapeutic perspectives with what you know about yourself and your history, to uncover the roots of your problem/s. By relational, I mean that I will pay close attention to the therapeutic relationship itself, encouraging you to share how you experience and feel about the developing relationship. I believe that the emotional quality of the therapeutic relationship matters most in bringing about a resolution or healing, rather than specific techniques. Maintaining a strong therapeutic alliance between us will therefore remain central to the relationship.

I realise that the prospect of psychotherapy - talking about your troubles, past and current experiences and relationships- can be daunting. To help I try to provide a warm and welcoming environment where you can feel comfortable and safe. I listen carefully and without judgement, helping you uncover meanings, patterns and choices. Whilst I do not offer easy solutions, I do support you to think more compassionately and clearly about yourself so that you have a stronger sense of who you are, both internally and in relationship to others. I also try to be transparent and open about the therapy process, maintaining a focus on your questions, thoughts and feelings about the goals and direction of therapy.

If you haven’t been in psychotherapy before, it may be hard to see how simply talking can bring about change. However, when you allow yourself the time and space to be truly listened to, you may find that coming to understand and value yourself through in-depth conversation with another can be profoundly liberating.
