I am an experienced Chartered Counselling Psychologist and Psychotherapist and co-founder of the national eating disorders charity, B-eat. In my experience eating disorder symptoms have a purpose, its function being to keep at bay a much deeper anxiety that is generally linked to how you feel about yourself, your relationships and your life. Eating disorders can fill your mind from the minute you wake up, whether thoughts about weight, food, calories, exercise, and they are always negative thoughts! Negative thoughts are probably all too familiar and mirror how you see yourself! It is my experience that eating disorders interfere with your thinking including why you may be so very unhappy and what really sits beneath your loneliness and a difficulty connecting with life. I am interested in exploring with you what is sitting beneath the symptoms. In a confidential space you can put away the "I'm fine" façade and together we will move between what is going on for you now and think about how these possibly harsh, negative thoughts and feelings about yourself came from. Eating disorders may feel like you're 'in control' but you're not and I suspect you know that even though you may try at times to deny it. I believe that as you feel stronger about who you are, as your sense of self-worth and self-esteem becomes stronger so your eating disorder diminishes because you can find the words; in essence, you will know and be kinder to yourself.
