My Approach

I am an Integrative therapist and I draw upon a relational psychoanalytic framework. This means that I am interested in how the here and now gives clues to our experiences in the past. Often we can become caught in relational patterns, within ourselves, with others and our context that feel inhibiting to our capacity to exert autonomy and choice moving forward. I work wholeheartedly alongside you in understanding these complexities, rather than analysing you objectively. I offer open-ended work, where we will review periodically as the therapy proceeds, and where there is space to explore material in more depth. Sometimes there is a specific piece of work that may require a more time-limited approach and I am also experienced in working in a shorter-term way across 6 or 12 sessions. In both these instances, I place importance on the value of creating a safe and confidential therapeutic relationship.

About Me

I hold an MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy from the Metanoia Institute, alongside two post-graduate diplomas in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I also completed a Foundation Certificate from the Bath Centre for Psychotherapy and Counselling early on in my training.

I have experience of working in health and community settings in this country and abroad, having started my career working in the field of HIV/AIDS. I have also worked with marginalised communities, including faith, refugee, asylum seeker, Gypsy and Irish Tranveller, race communities, women's health and young people. Working with individuals to build resilience, reach their potential and access what they need is something I feel strongly about and which underpins my values as a therapist. I am increasingly made aware of the importance of locating ourselves and our humanity in this ever-changing world. Finding a space in the presence of a regulating other can enable us to feel a deeper connection with ourselves, with others and with our environment.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Power processes run deep in society and in ourselves. I work in an anti-oppressive way to understand how, among other things, our upbringing, community of origin, education, class, life chances, nationality, gender, identity, and race influence who we are and how we feel in relation to others.
I have received specific training and have over 8 years experience of working with survivors of trauma. My approach is psycho-educational - understanding symptoms and distress; based in both neuroscience, which enables us to understand the physical location of our symptoms and how to regulate ourselves, and psychoanalytical - emphasising the transformative nature of trauma. Alongside this is a process of building safety (within and without the body); witnessing the loss and grief experienced by survivors and reintegrating back into society, or feeling a part of the human race.
