My Approach

In my private practice, I have worked with clients from diverse backgrounds, with a wide range of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues. My approach to therapy is collaborative, client-centered, and evidence-based, combining Gestalt therapy techniques with mindfulness, somatic awareness, and cognitive-behavioural strategies, to help individuals better understand their perceptual and emotional processes, develop a deeper connection to their authentic selves, and cultivate more meaningful and satisfying relationships with others.

About Me

As a psychotherapist with 18 years of experience in private practice and as a lecturer and trainer, I am passionate about helping individuals and groups achieve optimal mental health and well-being. Through my extensive clinical experience and academic background, I have developed a deep understanding of human behavior and the factors that contribute to mental health challenges.
In addition to my work in private practice, I have also served as a lecturer and trainer, teaching and supervising psychotherapy students, mental health professionals, and organizations on various aspects of mental health and psychotherapy. I am committed to providing culturally sensitive, and evidence-based training that is tailored to the needs of the individual.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety is often related to worries about the future or related to unresolved emotional experiences from the past, such as trauma or negative early life experiences. I help clients to explore and process their past experiences and to become more aware of emotional patterns and learn to express emotions in a healthy way so that you can begin to feel more empowered and in control of your anxiety. Anxiety can be exacerbated by negative self-talk and self-criticism. I encourage clients to become more aware of self-talk and to challenge negative thoughts. By learning to identify and replace negative self-talk with more positive and empowering thoughts, you can begin to feel safer and more confident in yourself. As a therapist, I work to build a safe and supportive relationship with my clients, which can help them to feel more secure and better able to express themselves. By providing a non-judgmental and empathic space, you can begin to feel more comfortable sharing your fears and concerns, thus reducing feelings of anxiety. You can learn to identify habitual coping skills which no longer serve you well and develop new ones that are effective in managing anxiety. Coping skills can include relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or visualization, or problem-solving strategies that help you address the root causes of your anxiety. Overall, by focusing on the present moment, exploring the root causes of anxiety, fostering self-awareness, building a supportive therapeutic relationship, and developing coping skills, you can learn to manage your anxiety and feel safer and more secure in yourself. It is important to remember that therapy is a collaborative process, and the specific techniques used will depend on each individual's unique needs and preferences.
Depression can be broadly defined as a persistent and intense feeling of sadness or loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable. It can also be accompanied by a range of physical and emotional symptoms, such as changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. I believe that working with depression requires a personalized approach that takes into account the unique experiences and needs of each client. As a therapist, my goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where clients can explore their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours in a non-judgmental setting. In my work with clients who experience depression, I help clients identify negative thought patterns and behaviours that contribute to depression and develop skills to manage symptoms. I also believe in the importance of addressing the underlying causes of depression, which can include past traumas, chronic stress, and relationship difficulties. By exploring these underlying factors, clients can gain a deeper understanding of their experiences and develop strategies to promote healing and growth. Overall, my approach to working with depression is collaborative, client-cantered, and evidence-based. I am committed to helping clients regain a sense of control over their lives and develop the skills and resources they need to promote mental health and well-being. If you are experiencing depression, I encourage you to seek support and know that recovery is possible.
I understand that race issues can have a significant impact on an individual's mental health and well-being. Race issues can be broadly defined as any difficulties or challenges related to an individual's racial identity, experiences of discrimination or prejudice, or navigating systems that perpetuate racial inequality. As a therapist, my goal is to create a safe and inclusive space where clients can explore their experiences related to race in a supportive and non-judgmental setting. I believe that it is essential to recognize and acknowledge the impact of systemic racism and discrimination on individuals and communities. In my work with clients who experience race-related issues, I use a culturally responsive and trauma-informed approach. This approach emphasizes the importance of cultural humility, active listening, and empathy. It involves acknowledging and validating clients' experiences, exploring the impact of systemic racism and oppression, and developing strategies to promote healing and resilience. I believe in the importance of working collaboratively with clients to identify their goals and develop a personalised plan for therapy that addresses their specific needs. This may involve exploring strategies for coping with discrimination and prejudice, developing self-care practices, building resilience, and addressing intergenerational trauma related to race and ethnicity.
Stress is a normal part of life and can be caused by a variety of factors, including work, relationships, finances, and health issues. However, when stress becomes chronic or overwhelming, it can have a significant impact on an individual's mental and physical health. Stress can be broadly defined as the body's response to perceived or actual threats, challenges, or changes in the environment. It can manifest in a range of physical and emotional symptoms, such as headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, anxiety, and irritability. I believe that it is essential to work collaboratively with clients to identify the sources of stress in their lives and develop a personalized plan for therapy that addresses their specific needs. This may involve exploring strategies for managing stressors, developing healthy coping skills, and improving self-care practices. My approach to working with stress is grounded in empathy, client-centred care, and evidence-based interventions. I am committed to helping clients develop the skills and resources they need to manage stress effectively and promote overall well-being.
Trauma can have a profound impact on an individual's life, often affecting their emotions, thoughts, and behaviours in significant ways. Trauma can be broadly defined as a distressing or disturbing event or experience that overwhelms an individual's ability to cope. It can result from a range of experiences, such as physical or sexual abuse, neglect, witnessing violence, or natural disasters. The effects of trauma can be long-lasting and can impact an individual's mental, emotional, and physical health. In my work as a psychotherapist, I use a trauma-informed approach that focuses on creating a safe and supportive environment for clients to explore their experiences and emotions. This approach emphasises the importance of building trust, fostering collaboration, and empowering clients to regain a sense of control over their lives. I believe that healing from trauma requires a holistic approach that takes into account the various dimensions of an individual's life, including their relationships, lifestyle, and sense of purpose. Working with trauma requires a specialised approach that takes into account the unique needs and experiences of each client, and I am committed to providing compassionate and personalised care to help clients heal from the effects of trauma and move towards a more fulfilling life.
