As a psychodynamic psychotherapist I believe the underlying causes of our emotional distress in the present, often lie in the past. In response to difficult and/or painful experience in early life we can unconsciously develop unhelpful patterns of behaviour 'coping mechanisms', self-destructive ways of being and relating which we continue into adulthood and which prevent us from becoming our authentic fulfilled selves.
By creating a space in therapy to explore and understand this, we can develop the capacity to relate to our personal narrative, our experiences, memories, relationships, feelings and beliefs in a more reflective yet active way, leading to greater awareness, self-acceptance, emotional resilience and the possibility of lasting, positive change.
At a 1 hour initial consultation you can tell me about yourself and what is making you think about therapy now. You can ask questions and get a sense as to whether you would feel comfortable working with me going forward. If you decide to proceed we would find a mutually convenient time to meet each week for a therapy session lasting 50 minutes. I usually suggest an open-ended arrangement which allows time for issues to be worked on in some depth. I also offer time limited therapy arrangements of 12/16 weeks if you would like to work with a specific focus.
