My Approach

I am a person-centred and experiential psychotherapist/counsellor. I believe that any person is the expert in their own world and they have an inherent ability to grow into the person they want to be if they are provided with the right conditions. Too often we forget who we really are and get consumed with pleasing others and being what they want us to be. In working with you, I will try to understand you as an individual and create a non-judgemental space for us to work together to make sense of your world and the challenges within it. Feeling safe and able to talk about anything offers the opportunity to cope, grow and change in ways that you may otherwise have been unable to. My approach means that I do not analyse or advise you but we would work together to explore personal and relational difficulties in order for you to come to your own conclusions and find your own way forward.

About Me

I have extensive experience of working in the criminal justice system with a range of people who have had multiple disadvantages in life, leading to criminal behaviour. This, combined with my therapy experience working in services for teenagers and young adults, women, and vulnerable people with complex needs has provided me with a wealth of experience building relationships with a variety of clients from all walks of life.

Particular areas of interest for me are; the change process including what keeps us stuck from moving forward when we really want to; humour in therapy; encouraging men to access therapy, body acceptance; and use of popular culture (TV, books and films) in supporting reflection and learning about ourselves.

I currently have availability on Mondays. I offer an initial free 15-30 minute telephone or Zoom consultation. It may be possible to arrange this on an alternative day of the week. This initial session will give me an opportunity to understand what you would like to counselling and what issues you would like to focus on. I will ask a variety of questions including some that will help me to ensure that my training, skills and experience are relevant to your needs. It is an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have and to see if we feel we can work together effectively. Please leave a message on my mobile or send me an email/text in the first instance.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Due to my experience working in the CJS I have seen the wide-reaching impact of domestic abuse. I am keen to support survivors in their quest to work through what has happened with them. I also see the value in working with people who have perpetrated domestic violence and wish to change this behaviour.
I have extensive experience of working with people convicted of sexual offences and believe that therapy can support individuals to change and sustain change in their behaviour.
Accepting and disclosing a potential risk of committing sexual offences can be one of the most stigma-inducing processes. I want to encourage people to seek support and work through such issues before actions escalate.
