Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have experience and training in working with clients who are experiencing physical and psychological issues relating to ageing and or simply a change in ability and willingness to engage socially. Everyone deserves to be seen, to feel seen, respected, and valued and I work toward ensuring that this is the case with my clients.
Anxiety can present at any stage in life and can be limiting socially. Clients experiencing anxiety are invited to explore their thoughts, behaviours and feelings and ultimately find ways to reduce the sensations associated with their anxiety. In the process clients can begin to understand the origin of their anxiety. Anxiety is often related to uncomfortable experiences and possibly traumatic memories that have never been spoken of or processed. These will be compassionately addressed and strategies introduced to heal the traumas and reduce the un-wellcomed and inappropriate responses which arise in relation to difficult memories. Where appropriate I offer EMDR and the Flash Technique which are proven effective interventions used to help with anxiety.
I provide therapy that is both supportive and challenging. The feeling of separation from the world and the absence of emotion are symptoms of depression. These can be so severe that self destructive thoughts and ideas can become overwhelming. This can change. You do not have to feel this bad. Therapy needs to be respectful of the feelings and experiences of the client. I involve strategies to help you understand why you feel this way and will help you to feel differently. I offer the processes involved in Internal Family Systems and Attachment focused EMDR as effective ways of resolving emotional states which lead to depression.
EMDR is a well established psychotherapy that works by enabling the safe and compassionate exploration of distressing memories and the beliefs following on from those experiences. These memories may originate from any stage in a person's life from infancy through to adulthood often these memories carry with them unjustified negative beliefs about the self. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to facilitate development of new perspectives on the way a person remembers and understands their earlier experiences. I have been using EMDR successfully since 2004. It is approved by NICE and the WHO for the safe and effective treatment of PTSD.
We are social animals and therefore relationships constitute the way in which we connect with others. Relationships should help you to feel a sense of pride, of being in the world, of value, and belonging. However, our relationships with family and friends and work colleagues can be difficult at times. It is helpful to discuss the discomfort and concerns arising from these connections to enable change and improvements which lead to happier and more healthy ways of connecting. This is particularly important in couples and families where a breakdown in relating can be devastating for all concerned. Historical difficulties in early family attachments frequently impact later patterns of relating.
