Finding the right counsellor or psychotherapist can be a confusing and daunting challenge. Let me try and give you an idea of what you can expect from working with me.
At the heart of my clinical approach is a collaborative effort to reach a shared understanding of your lived experience and inner world. I believe your sense of self and the world is not fixed. It is a continuous creation that is shaped by your family and social history along with the broader cultural forces around you. (In technical terms I describe this non-pathologising approach as ‘phenomenological’ and ‘hermeneutic.’)
In my experience the feelings of anxiety or depression that clients describe to me often turn out to be a valuable signal that something in their circumstances is out of kilter and requires attention. Together we can discover new perspectives to expand your current understanding of your life. My hope is that as your perspective shifts new possibilities will emerge for you.
I meet with most clients for one 50 minute session per week. My fee for this is £85 per session. I also reserve a number of reduced fee slots for clients who have limited means or are experiencing financial hardship.
Need to talk to someone? Perhaps you are feeling stressed, anxious or depressed. You may be struggling with a relationship at home or at work. Or maybe things just don’t seem to add up anymore. I am Matthew Wood (he/ him). I am a psychotherapist accredited by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapists.
Over seven years of training I have gained clinical qualifications including an MSc in Integrative Psychotherapy from the Metanoia Institute and a Certificate in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy from Birkbeck, University of London.
I have been offering psychotherapy and counselling to individual adults for over five years. My caseload has been diverse: At Waterloo Community Counselling and the Metanoia Counselling and Psychotherapy Service I have worked with clients with diverse lived experiences, representing a wide and intersectional range of identities, including differences in age, gender, sexuality, and cultural background. At Community and Projects Ealing I provided therapeutic support to individuals who have been given psychiatric diagnoses including ADHD, PTSD, OCD and paranoid schizophrenia. As a disabled person I appreciate how belonging to a marginalized group can negatively impact well-being. My own lived experience as a person with a disability informs my belief that our identity structures our experience of the world and ourselves.
Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.
