My Approach

Psychoanalytically-informed with regards to transference and projective processes.
Attachment-based focus on intimate relationships and affect regulation
Group Analytic which offers a perspective on the social and cultural matrix we internalise from infancy that shapes our values and sense of belonging or of being an outsider.

About Me

I provide once-weekly individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy, attachment-based couple psychotherapy and group analytic psychotherapy. I also offer clinical supervision to individuals or teams. I am happy to respond to email enquiries or telephone calls about what I can offer and my fees. I generally suggest that it is helpful to arrange a three session consultation - during which I develop a psychological formulation and take a personal history. The follow up sessions over the subsequent two weeks enable us to reflect on the Initial session and what has emerged between meetings.

My professional career has been predominantly in the NHS mental health service as a Consultant Adult Psychotherapist and as an area Lead for Psychology and Psychological Therapies in Sussex Partnership NHS Trust.
Previously I worked as a trainer and consultant in the field of child protection specializing in the areas of childhood disability and institutional abuse of children.. My earlier career was as a specialist social worker in a multidisciplinary child protection unit.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Different existential issues arise in early adulthood; in the forming of partnerships and perhaps creating a family; in midlife when we review our life and career goals; in later life when we face retirement and our mortality. At such times we may unhelpfully compare ourselves with others and lose sight of our agency and choices that remain open to us. Therapy can help us notice our internal critics and value our strengths that we may overlook.
Both men and women can feel great shame about losing control in stressful situations and will often have lost sight of emotional trauma that underlies such 'dysregulation'. Distinguishing between healthy, constructive anger and panicky or controlling destructive anger is a good place to start in addressing its problematic manifestations. The non- judgmental confidential space offered by therapy allows for a safe exploration of anger, rage and panic.
It is sometimes said that couples therapy brings 'three couples' into the room as each member of a couple will bring the legacy of their parents' relationship into their own relationship. What is 'normal' for one of the couple may be bizarre and provocative to the other. Navigating conflicts over differences can be aided by the honest intimate conversations in couples therapy that enable individuals to discover their partner and reveal their self more fully.
I offer therapy to a broad range of individuals with a wide range of presenting difficulties. In the therapy we explore the roots of the difficulties and consider what may be amenable to change.
Sexual abuse has four main traumagenic factors: traumatic sexualisation; betrayal of trust; stigmatisation; helplessness. The trauma is too often compounded by denial or disbelief from others and the victim being blamed and internalising the shame induced in them by the perpetrator and social myths about abuse. Careful trauma-informed therapy can help an individual explore the complexity of their feelings and help make sense of experiences that are likely to shape their everyday interactions with others as well lead to self-destructive behaviour.
