Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Abuse can be physical, emotional, psychological, political or spiritual and is often invisible or hidden. Abuse can happen in organisations, relationships, online and in any setting where there is a power dynamic. Sometimes abuse is happening outside of awareness, and surfacing the issue is needed to raise concerns, which can then be addressed with the help of psychotherapy. Most often I work with people in identifying whether they are being abused, or who have suffered significantly as a result of abuse. There can be misdiagnosis because individuals fear disclosing their situation to mental health professionals and they end up with medication or the wrong type of therapy, which misses the key issue. In most cases, the work I do with this client group involves treating complex PTSD
My special interest lies in the effect modern life has on people. Accelerated lifestyles, screen dependency, particularly on social media and now artificial intelligence, has led to an epidemic of anxiety depression and despair. Alienation and isolation of people brought about by the rise of technology is having an impact on mental health. I support the movement towards helping people find safety in small groups, and in their one to one relationships. I offer sessions where talking about these issues help raise awareness of the effect technology is having on people and society. Talking about the ethical use of technology is part of my contribution to psychotherapy practice to help people manage its effects.
Much of TA therapy involves unpacking childhood experiences, which means talking about parents. It can be difficult to confront what happened in childhood and I hold that parents were doing what they thought was best in the the circumstances with the knowledge and resources they had at the time. Whatever happened, whether real, imagined, remembered by others, or is still happening, it is important that your truth is heard. Therapy in this way addresses the unthought known, an expression used by the psychoanalyst Christopher Bollas, to describe an innate knowing, which the mind has not brought into awareness. Psychotherapy grounded in psychoanalytic principles underpins the relational approach I use in working with childhood experiences. Becoming a parent can sometimes surface these issues perinatally, and then the development of our own children can, at times, remind of the past as well. All of this can be held in therapeutic alliance where generational healing can begin.
I supervise trainee and qualified practitioners in small groups of no more than four people to ensure quality of practice and that the number of hours required for UKCP is met. My approach to supervision is relational and based on the core competencies set out by the European Association of Transactional Analysis and HIPC.
I provide TA training in the field of psychotherapy, which includes my relational approach. You can train with me at The Academy of Transactional Analysis. The first step on your journey is the TA101 course. This is the official introduction to transactional analysis and the gateway to formal training as a psychotherapist. This training programme is four years part-time and leads to registration with UKCP in the Humanistic and Integrative College.
