Family and Systemic Psychotherapy helps people in relationships to help each other. We all experience difficulties in life and Family Therapists believe that seeing these in the context of the relationships we are part of can help to understand the problem better and use the resources that these relationships can offer. Family and Systemic Psychotherapy helps to open up the problem and understand it from different perspectives, share ideas for ways forward and build towards positive and lasting change that is supported by the whole family or system. We therefore often see two or more people in each session, but can also work with individuals.
I provide Family and Systemic Psychotherapy for families, couples and individuals. I qualified as a Family and Systemic Psychotherapist in 2012, having completed my MSc at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London. I am currently completing a Doctorate in Systemic Practice at the University of Bedfordshire.
I work in the NHS in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) in South Wales. I predominantly work with young people with eating disorders and their families, recognising the impact that eating disorders have on families and the resource that families can bring to supporting a child or adolescent back to health. I also work with young people with a range of mental health difficulties including low mood, depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicidal ideation.
I also work independently with families, individuals and couples who feel it may be helpful to explore some of the relationships that are important to them and to understand how they would like their relationships to be moving forwards. I usually work virtually, offering evening and weekend sessions, but can offer some home visits in South Wales for established clients.
Before I trained as a Family and Systemic Psychotherapist, I trained and worked as a Speech and Language Therapist in neurology services. I worked with families affected by stroke, traumatic brain injury and progressive neurological conditions, whose communication and cognitive difficulties affected the ways in which they were able to communicate together. Through this work I became very interested in the impact on the relationships in these families and what I could do to support them. I worked as a Speech and Language Therapist for 15 years and whilst I no longer practice in this area, I bring these skills to the work I do with families who are experiencing illness and its effects upon their relationships.
I am a qualified and registered Family and Systemic Psychotherapist, with the following Core Qualifications and Registrations:
MSc in Family Therapy
BSc in Speech Sciences
UKCP Registered
Member of the Association of Family Therapy
Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.
