My Approach

I start by listening first, learning about you, and then working together to support you in deciding what changes you would like to make. You are the expert on you. In the past you have made the best decisions you could, with the knowledge, experience, and resources that you had at the time. I work with you to discover what you need now, and how we use your knowledge of yourself together with my experience to help you achieve this. There is no judgement (of you or of others), and nothing you "should" do. We work at your pace, and I will support and guide you from our initial call, through the process of you telling me your story, thinking about what change you choose and how you build that into your life.

About Me

Hello and welcome. I am a medical doctor and a psychotherapist. I work with adults of any age and with a wide range of problems and have a particular interest in anxiety or burnout, especially in doctors, health professionals, teachers and anyone in a caring role. I worked for 25 years as an NHS doctor before developing my psychotherapy practice and so I understand the pressures of working in overstretched systems.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have a special interest in working with anxiety and burnout, and these are among the most common reasons for clients to come to see me. You may have been working harder and harder, often for years, trying to be good enough or to provide a good service from a broken system. We often ignore the early warning signs our bodies try to send us, hoping that if we can just keep going we will finally solve the problem and be allowed to stop, but there is always someone else needing something else. I can help you to look at the causes of your anxiety and burnout and to find the choices to live differently.
a diagnosis of cancer, whether for yourself or for someone you care about, can be a devastating change. There is often fear and uncertainty. You may have worries that you don't want to discuss with your loved one, or emotions that you don't understand or that feel 'wrong'. I can support you through this and offer a safe space where all emotions are allowed and where you can ask whatever questions you need.
We spend much of our time in relationship - not just romantic relationships but relationships with our families, friends, neighbours, and colleagues. Difficulties and misunderstandings in relationships cause sadness and suffering but many of us are not taught how to deal with this or how to repair when things go wrong. I can work with you to look at how you feel in your relationships, and especially at any repeating patterns, enabling you to have more choices, more clarity, and deeper connections with others.
