My training as an integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor means my approach takes ideas from different therapeutic and developmental models – humanistic, psychodynamic, attachment theory, understanding of trauma and brain development – and I can tailor therapy or counselling to the needs of the individual. However, experience has taught me that therapeutic models are secondary to the importance of a relational approach.
It is the relationship between myself and a child or young person that is central to therapy being helpful and I offer a warm and relaxed environment where children and young people can explore whatever they need to. If a young person’s thoughts and feelings are accepted as neither right nor wrong but simply a reflection of their current state-of-mind, this will help them to communicate more freely and, in turn, increase their own reflective capacity. Children and young people can sometimes struggle to communicate through words alone, and , depending on the needs and wishes of the child or young person, it is here that I introduce the use of creative activities, and play to help with therapeutic exploration and support.
I am a warm and compassionate integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor specifically trained to work with children and young people with over 20-years’ experience supporting children and adolescents with a range of social, emotional and mental health needs. Since finishing my psychotherapeutic counselling training in 2018, I have provided therapy for children and young people in schools, for Brighton & Hove and Surrey local authorities, a counselling service, and in private practice.
My positions in schools and in care settings has resulted in a wealth of experience of working with children and adolescents from a multitude of backgrounds, presenting with issues such as anxiety, low mood, trauma, bereavement, fragmented and complex family relationships, self-harm, bullying and friendship issues and the impact of social media among many. In addition to direct work with children and young people, I provide consultations for parents and carers who would like a space to think about their child, any difficulties they may be struggling with and how best to support them.
