My Approach

I have been a qualified full time therapist for 26 years, working in a wide variety of settings and working across different cultures. My approach is Gestalt (including humanistic elements), and I work relationally while integrating comprehensively other techniques from many disciplines, meaning that there are always many options available to make sure we work on your issues in the best way possible.

The purpose of my work is to bring about change – which allows people to be inspired, to have access to their own potential, to be able to express themselves fully throughout their daily lives and to grow to respect and be in tune with their environment. As such it is part of a much wider, far reaching vision. As individuals we have much to learn about ourselves through therapy – finding and developing our strengths, overcoming our wounds and history and learning how to gain fulfilment in our lives. Any changes which occur in the therapy room can have a pleasing cathartic effect, with great short term benefits, but of themselves are not likely to be of lasting worth unless they take into account your context (world), and are taken forth into your relationships, communities, and immediate environment. Doing this enables us to see that the benefits of our changes have a far reaching and spreading influence beyond ourselves, confirming that we have tapped into something deep and significant.

I work relationally and creatively from a Gestalt perspective (rooted in a humanistic standpoint). I increasingly offer my therapy outdoors, not only because of covid 19, but because of the huge impact the environment and our relationship to it has upon us, its importance in our wellbeing, and because of the ways it enhances the therapeutic work. My work is split between therapy, supervision and training, offered face to face both indoor and out, and over zoom. I offer full hour appointments.

I work from Lancaster and south Cumbria, and from Manchester, and work outdoors, face to face indoors and over zoom. Please let me know where you are based and your preferred method of receiving therapy when contacting me, as this assists us in booking a session quickly - email njbarrott@gmail.com

About Me

I have found that the way I work sensitively assists the client to get to the heart of the issue quickly, which means that we can spend more time working on the issues which matter. I work relationally, yet have a lot of experience working in different ways which can help you overcome different issues, using techniques from many different schools of therapy. However, these are only used where appropriate, and I am always fully open with you as to how I am working- there is nothing done secretively to you in sessions but the work is a collaboration between the two of us.

While I have worked with most issues and my specialism is people, I do have experience of working particularly with a few issues:- Working outdoors and with the environment, Autism and Autism with PDA, Crises of faith and people moving away from religion, Loss of artistic creativity (writers block, loss of motivation for musicians/actors etc.), Eco-grief and anxiety regarding the climate crisis, and our search for meaning (what is it all about?). While these are my specialisms, I find it healthier and more rewarding to work with all issues.

My therapy work happens either outdoors, via Zoom or face to face, in Lancaster and South Cumbria, and Manchester

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I work with autism and PDA, and have an understanding of how these issues can affect you in daily life.
I consider a persons culture in every aspect of how they are as a person- it is the invisible language which we all communicate. I have written about cultural issues in therapy, and can assist you in working with such issues.
I work with this issue for individuals and couples.
I have been offering therapy online since the first lock-down, as well as offering teaching and supervision online too, and as such it is my main method of working, and one which I have helped train other therapists in.
I have been offering clinical supervision for over 9 years, both individually and in groups, and face to face, over zoom and also outdoors.
