My Approach

I am an attachment-based psychotherapist based in Old Street, Islington. I have completed a four-year training in attachment-based psychoanalytic psychotherapy at The Bowlby Centre. As well as my private practice, I also work as a psychotherapist within the NHS.

My work is particularly informed by the following:

Attachment

In attachment-based psychotherapy, we explore the relationships that shape our life -- both in the past and the present. This helps us create more satisfying connections with others and feel more secure in ourselves.

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis seeks to bring our hidden thoughts, feelings and desires out into the open. In doing so, we can get to know ourselves better and gain new freedoms and choices.

Trauma

Trauma happens when our mind, body and self are overwhelmed – often resulting from abuse, neglect, violence or loss. I use trauma-informed approaches to reduce overwhelm and disentangle past and present.

Power and oppression

I prioritise the impact of power and oppression within my clients' lives and within the therapy relationship. I strive to be an ally to those whose power, identity and humanity have been undermined.

About Me

I believe that psychotherapy has the potential to get to the root of distress. Through a safe and confidential therapeutic relationship, we can come to understand ourselves better and live with more fulfilment, freedom and self-acceptance. Having been in therapy myself, I know first-hand that the process and effects can be profound.

Part of this means looking at how experiences and relationships from earlier in your life are affecting things now. And part of this means learning to be with your present-day experience in a different way – becoming more mindful and curious about your emotions, your mind and your body.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have a particular interest in working psychotherapeutically with chronic pain and physical symptoms. All pain originates in the brain -- and trauma, fear and anxiety shape how the brain functions. This sometimes leaves the brain overly sensitive to danger and prone to producing pain -- even when, physically, there is nothing wrong. In these instances, the pain or symptom is absolutely real. However, understanding and addressing the issue requires working on an emotional level -- this is where psychotherapy comes in. In my work with chronic pain and physical symptoms, I help people calm and regulate the nervous system. I support individuals to reconnect to their bodies and to access, feel and process their emotions. In doing so, people can come to feel safer in their minds and bodies, dialing down the brain's pain-responses and easing physical symptoms.
My training in attachment-based psychotherapy can be particularly helpful for people struggling in their relationships e.g with partners, friends, family or colleagues. Often our present-day relationships are shaped by harmful patterns from our past. By exploring and understanding these patterns we can learn to let them go and create more satisfying relationships - with others and with ourselves.
