My Approach

My primary approach is based on working with the client/group in the here-and-now of the session. I work with the client in understanding how early childhood experiences in the client's family of origin impact on the client's current behaviour and responses to their life in the present. My experience is that awareness can liberate the client/group to make changes in their behaviour and responses which are more conducive to their wellbeing and personal growth. My approach is embedded in my psychoanalytic training although I am open to using and thinking about aspects of different modalities which I think might be helpful to the client.

About Me

I am a fully qualified and practicing group analyst and am a member of The Institute of Group Analysis (IGA). I started my training at The IGA and completed a Post-Graduate Diploma and a MA in Group Analytic Psychotherapy at the WPF. I also trained and qualified to work psychodynamically with individuals at WPF.

Two years before I started the training, I enjoyed completing a Post-Graduate Diploma in Psychoanalytic Observation at the Tavistock Institute, which provide a wonderful grounding in psychoanalytic theory and practice.

I enjoyed working psychodynamically with adolescents at the Brent Centre for Adolescents, individually and in groups. I think that young people can make use of psychotherapy to make changes beneficial to them in a relatively short time Prior to my psychoanalytic training, I had a long career in education as a Science teacher in mixed comprehensive schools and as a Deputy Head and Acting Head teacher in a girls' comprehensive school. As a young teacher, I attended a two-year Course at the Tavistock Institute on Counselling Aspects in Education Parts 1 and 2 which stimulated a life-long interest in thinking about and understanding group processes.

At the other end of the age spectrum, I believe that elderly people can also benefit from psychotherapy. For 7 years I conducted groups for people from a wide range of backgrounds aged 55+ at Age UK Camden. I also worked with many individuals in 1:1 sessions.

Currently, I conduct experiential groups for training psychotherapists; I supervise groups and individuals and I work with individual clients privately.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to co-facilitate Gestalt/psychodrama groups in Spain, Greece and England, whilst retaining a psychodynamic perspective and interpretations. When appropriate, I use aspects of Gestalt theory in my thinking about my current work.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I have worked with men in groups with HIV and AIDs and have found that open discussion and acceptance benefits all members of the group.
I have found clients even with profound long-lasting anxiety, can achieve some liberation from the paralysing grip of anxiety in psychotherapy. Frequently the depression often linked to anxiety is also alleviated.
I have worked with people from very wide backgrounds of race, culture and socioeconomic positions and am very aware of the impacts of such differences on the way the client interacts with others. Differences in, and attitudes to, sexuality and gender may also link with cultural differences and need to be understood.
For many years, I have conducted experiential groups for trainees in counselling and psychodynamic/analytic therapy and can witness the personal growth that can take place. I also enjoy supervising trainees who have recently graduated in order to support their development as qualified psychotherapists.
