My Approach

I offer remote sessions by video / phone, and in person in Portishead near Bristol. I also offer outdoor sessions or 'walk and talk' where this feels a good fit.
My aim is for us both to develop a compassionate understanding of your needs and difficulties. There is always a repression of some parts of ourselves. Much of the time that may not be an issue, but when we are in emotional difficulty it is often these parts of the self that need to be given attention. We will seek to locate the silenced parts within and to given them a voice.
There are many doorways into the psyche. The trick is to find the paths that work for you, the ones that open to where you need to go. As an integrative therapist I draw on different perspectives at different times for different people. Sometimes words alone cannot always convey the truth of your experience. Our split-off unconscious parts often speak through imagery, metaphors, or bodily sensations. These all offer a direct line to the subconscious. I work creatively with what arises to explore these avenues.
We are embodied beings. There is no getting away from it: the body keeps the score. But how to access what the body may be telling us? It is about finding ways to notice and connect and cast light on what is held within that may be unconscious. I also pay attention to what arises between us relationally as this can offer a window onto significant relationships in the world.
We are all part of a larger whole that continually shaping the undercurrents of our emotional life. My approach is therefore ‘transpersonal’, recognising that our psyche is moulded not only by our childhood but by a stream of influences: ancestral, social, cultural, spiritual, environmental. My primary focus is to establish a space which is safe and supportive enough for you to embark on this journey of inner exploration.

About Me

I am a Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, meaning that my training was in depth and intensive enough to work at a psychotherapeutic level with early wounds from childhood and the impact of these. I see clients short term and mostly longer term, as required. I am deeply interested in what makes a meaningful life, and have worked in the field of psychology and wellbeing in many different roles. Being raised in two countries and speaking both languages led to a curiosity about identity, belonging, language, reality, meaning and soul - or rather the deeper emotional texture of life. I studied psychology and philosophy at university and hold post-graduate qualifications in evidence-based psychological practice, organisational psychology and psychotherapeutic counselling. I spent seven years working as a therapist in the NHS, and many years in homelessness services. I also studied art, worked in business and the voluntary sector, before qualifying as a therapist in 2017. Since then I have been running a busy private practice. I am a lifelong learner and continue to explore new fields and developments within psychotherapy and trauma.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Growing up between two countries left me with an interest in identity and belonging and how to find a voice of one’s own. In the book ‘Third Culture Kids: Growing up among worlds’ I found my own experience poignantly described, helping me to see my feelings as natural and understandable, which reduced the sense of aloneness. A difficult childhood can leave us with a lack of belonging, a sense of exile, feeling different, lacking a sense of control over your life, crisis of identity, difficulties with commitment, or a sense of psychological homelessness. Searching for a place in the universe is part of the human condition but this can be a sore process when our sense of identity is conflicted or absent due to factors in our childhood outside our control.
I have work in depth with many who have are struggling with the long term impacts of sexual abuse in childhood, including episodes of dissociation, flashbacks, low mood, instability, relational and sexual difficulties. These effects can be so enduring and so hard to live with, but my experience is that with patience and commitment they can be undone.
The impact of trauma - whether through illness, death, abuse or neglect - can be long-lasting and damaging to our ability to live a free and fulfilled life. There are ways and means to work towards discharging the fear response that is held in the body and mind. My experience is that it is possible to shift and move on from traumatic life events and the invitation is to find out where the trauma is being held and what it needs to express so as to be fully released.
