I am a qualified systemic/family psychotherapist and social worker. I am able to work with individuals, couples, and families. I can offer long or short term therapy. In the first session we would talk about what has brought you to therapy and we can explore what you feel will be most helpful to work on. Finding the right fit with a therapist is so important, and building a relationship where you feel held, safe, and able to voice your inner most feelings. In order to do this I will provide you with the space you need; this may entail thinking about patterns you’re stuck in, providing strategies which might be helpful, or affording you the space to feel heard and understood. As well as being able to talk about very difficult experiences, we will also think about what is going well, and maybe even finding moments of humour. Particularly when working with children and young people, but also adults, I will sometimes use playful and body based approaches, which may often be a very important way in to being able to talk about what is going on.
I have worked with children and families for the past twenty years, and since qualifying as a family therapist, I have specialised in working with adoption, foster care, and kinship families. I have experience with disabled children and their families, complex trauma, and young people who are presenting with high risk behaviours. I have experience of working with couples, and extensive experience providing therapeutic support to parents and carers.
From a young age I became very interested in relationships and the stories which are told in families. As a child I lost close family and struggled to understand what losing someone meant. As I became an adult, I realised that being able to understand some of my past and the underlying feelings I experienced, meant finding ways to talk and make sense of who I am. During my twenties I became a kinship carer for my brother-in-law at a time when very little support was available and this provided a steep learning curve in how to be a parent as well as working with a professional network. Coming to access therapy myself and train as a therapist was driven by my past experiences, as well as seeking out a role where I might be helpful to others who are struggling. I am now the proud father of two children and have a passion for the outdoors, music, and sport.
Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.
