My Approach

Whatever your reason for seeking therapy, I believe we all deserve an opportunity to be fully listened to and taken seriously by someone who can non-judgmentally help to make sense of our thoughts, feelings, behaviour and experiences. I know from sitting in the client chair myself that with this assistance we all have the capacity to heal, transform and grow, even from the toughest life experiences.

My approach is collaborative, respectful and down-to-earth and my aim is to provide a supportive, creative and confidential space where we can explore who you are in the context of your distinctive personal world, and the issues that bring you to therapy. I will help you to make the changes that you hope for, by re-connecting you with your feelings, your deepest needs and your desires.

I work with individual adults, generally in-person on an open-ended basis or for a minimum of 12 weeks. I also work online and by phone.

If you want to know more, please get in touch at gemmamaconietherapy@gmail.com to arrange a free 20-minute phone conversation. After that we can meet for an introductory session to see whether we might like to work together. Sessions last 50 minutes and cost £70 per session.

About Me

“Contrary to what we may have been taught to think, unnecessary and unchosen suffering wounds us but need not scar us for life. It does mark us. What we allow the mark of our suffering to become is in our own hands.” – bell hooks

Hello! My name is Gemma (she/her and questioning) and I’m a professionally qualified and experienced Relational Integrative therapist working with adults in Hackney, London E8. My integrative approach means that I bring together a number of different theories from Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Existential, Attachment, Transactional Analysis and Body Psychotherapy traditions to underpin the unique way that I work.

I am interested in how our experiences from the past, along with our cultures, shape our present, in terms of relationships, self-image and self-beliefs. Overall, I am interested in the way we relate to one another, and how that is representational of other past and present relationships in our lives, including the relationship we have with ourselves. At the heart of my practice is the conviction that we heal through relationships, through how we dare to show up and experience one another as wonderful, flawed human beings.

I provide a non-judgmental and welcoming space for you to talk about any issues that might be concerning you. I have extensive experience in working with a wide variety of emotional difficulties, mental health challenges and relationship issues including anxiety, depression, bereavement, low self-esteem, and life changes.

I am a fully supervised accredited member of UKCP and abide by their code of professional ethics. I am also a member of The Relational School (TRS).

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Ageing involves loss and the subsequent need to grieve, at any stage of life. I provide a space where clients can feel into their mixed feelings about life changes and other age-related issues. Particular interests are working with pregnant and new mothers, and peri-menopausal and menopausal women.
I have worked with many clients suffering from anxiety, helping them to manage symptoms in way that works specifically for them, whilst exploring possible root causes and triggers.
Many clients I work with are conflicted between the person they are and the person they would like to be or feel they should be. Much of my work with these clients is getting to know different parts of themselves, some of which they might find shameful. My non-judgemental attitude helps clients become more accepting of themselves and helps their conflicting parts learn to work together with one another.
Many of our difficulties in life stem from the ways we relate to others. Using Attachment theory, I can help you explore how the ways you learnt to relate in your earliest relationships, both in what was modelled to you and in the way you might have adapted to get your needs met, and how that might be manifesting in your relationships in the present. I also like to work with the relationship we create together in the therapy room.
Stress is endemic in the way we all live, particularly for minorities and anyone who is subject to discrimination. I work with clients to identify stressors and, even when those stressors are unsurmountable and systemic, I help clients discover their own sense of agency. I also work with the body to help complete historical and current stress cycles.
