My approach is integrative, which means that I draw from a number of philosophies and theories and these inform my practice. These include systems theory, intersubjectivity, attachment, psychodynamic, object relations, cognitive, behavioural, compassion-focussed, among others. I believe the therapeutic relationship to be the most significant factor for change and growth, and that in talking with an attuned, present, non-judgement other, we can connect with parts of the self that may have been denied, neglected, hurt, abused, traumatised, allowing the whole self to heal, thrive and to flourish.
I am an Integrative Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor. I have worked in private practice and in Primary NHS Healthcare for over 15years.
I offer both short term counselling (to work on a specific, or current, worry, difficulty or distress) and long term psychotherapy to explore deeper, underlying issues that shape our identity, our personal values and beliefs and inform the choices we make. I work to increase awareness and understanding of the self (developmentally) and of the self in relation to other(s) (relationally). The process of therapy fosters growth through understanding, helping us to move forward with our lives. I believe our perception of the relationship we have with our own self or with another person, is frequently the catalyst for seeking therapeutic support.
Exploring our difficulties, questions or uncertainties can help make sense of our experiences. Self-reflection and self-awareness increase capacity to 'know' one's self, increase inner compassion, connection and a true expression of who we are. Our basic human need is for safety; to be seen, heard, respected, validated and for our relational needs to be 'met' through the development of deeper and more satisfying relationships. Together we explore biological, social, cultural, medical etc factors that inform our sense of being and identity; individually, with others, and in the world.
If you are over 18 years old I invite you to speak to me, in confidence, about whatever might be contributing to your emotional distress at this time. Get in touch if you have had previous counselling and want to do some further work. Contact me if you are an 'older' adult impacted by change or transition, eg grief and loss, health, retirement, redundancy.
