My Approach

Relationships are at the heart of the human experience and building both a strong connection to yourself and between you and your counsellor is vital to successful therapy. I believe it is important for me to be a human first, and a counsellor second, which I hope will help you to more easily relate to and form a therapeutic bond with me. I am open and honest, including about my own limits and imperfections, with the intention to encourage you to become more comfortable to talk openly about your own thoughts, feelings and behaviours and also feel confident in voicing what you find more or less helpful  in our sessions together.
All humans are unique individuals, with different needs and therefore I aim to maintain a flexible and creative approach to counselling which reflects this. One approach isn't helpful for everyone and I am keen to consider all theoretical approaches in working together to find a combination of methods that works best for you.

I strive to to offer a space that feels calm, comfortable and secure to allow you to build trust. Alongside academic theory, I also draw on creative elements of practice, working with music and art, where appropriate, to access unconscious thoughts and feelings (only if you are comfortable with this. I've seen the terror in some people's eyes when I've asked if they'd like to paint something and I completely understand!)
I am a fully qualified integrative and psychotherapeutic counsellor, which means my approach combines different modalities of counselling theory, including psychodynamic, humanistic, existential, person- centred, CBT, somatic and creative arts. I aim to support clients to explore the impact of past events and experiences, attachment patterns, trauma and relationships to gain insight into what is happening in the 'here and now'.

It is my belief and personal experience that counselling can be a truly positive, transformative process but I also acknowledge that it is hard work and, at times, painful. I am committed to supporting my clients through providing warmth, empathy and non- judgement to engage in the challenge of change to achieve their goals, understand themselves better and improve their lives and relationships long term.
I am happy to walk alongside you, every step of the way in that transformation.

' Commit to loving yourself completely. It's the most radical thing you will do in your lifetime'–Andrea Gibson.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

The effects of abuse can cast a long shadow over the lives of victims and survivors. I have worked with and/or have experience of domestic violence, narcissistic abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, coercive control, psychological and emotional abuse, neglect and self- neglect.
Bullying isn't something that just happens in the school playground. We can also experience it as adults, in social groups, family and romantic relationships, workplaces and educational institutions as well as online. No one is immune to becoming a target and the impacts can have a devastating effect on how we feel about ourselves and the world. I feel passionate about supporting people in navigating and recovering from these impacts, working together to rebuild trust, self- esteem and confidence, bringing clarity and managing associated anxiety and depression.
Having been previously diagnosed with breast cancer myself, I have first hand knowledge of the mix of feelings a diagnosis can bring. It can be an overwhelming, confusing and frightening time and the emotional, psychological and physical impacts of treatment can extend way beyond the last hospital appointment. Working as a volunteer counsellor at Big C has also given me valuable insight into the vast range of impacts of cancer on all those affected and I feel driven to provide support for anyone, whether patient, family member or friend through this experience.
Breakdowns in communication, lack of emotional connection and unresolved conflicts can be painful to confront and work through. Whoever you are relating to, whether it's parents, children, siblings, friends or work colleagues, problems in these relationships can lead to trust issues, difficulty setting boundaries, frustration, loneliness, confusion and resentment; impacting self- esteem and mental wellbeing. I am aim to provide a space where you can speak honestly and openly about these relationships and to support you in exploring patterns, improving communication, setting healthy boundaries and rebuilding your sense of connection in the world.
