In my work as a psychotherapist and counsellor I notice that anxiety, stress and depression are at the forefront of people's lives in today's world. Panic attacks, loneliness along with a vague feeling of stuckness are also often mentioned. These symptoms can have a profound effect on our relationships, our self-esteem, our health and our wellbeing and they hold us back from living a fulfilling life and from becoming the person we were born to be. Therapy offers you a safe, quiet space to explore whatever is troubling you at your own pace and in your own time.
You may be considering counselling or therapy for one or a number of reasons. Maybe you have had a sudden change in circumstances which you are experiencing as a great sense of loss or maybe there is an underlying feeling of soul searching that something is missing but you can't quite identify what that something is. At any time we can be required to face unwanted challenges as life's inevitable ups and downs get the better of us. Maybe you are feeling overwhelmed or maybe you are just feeling dissatisfied in such a way that interferes with getting on with everyday life. Whatever your particular reason for seeking therapy is, however deep seated or seemingly trivial your problem, therapy can offer a wonderfully healing experience. Typical issues that bring people to seek therapy are:
stress, anxiety and panic attacks
relationship problems
lack of confidence and self esteem
developing a creative idea
work related issues including bullying
feelings of emptiness and lack of direction
childhood neglect and abandonment
generational trauma
loss and bereavement
adapting to change of circumstances
feeling stuck
relationship break-up
finding meaning and purpose in retirement
identity issues
illness
loss of a sense of self
and any manner of things personal to YOU.
Therapy offers you a listening experience like no other and gives you an opportunity to explore your current situation in a safe, non-judgemental space. By examining the problem from many different viewpoints you can connect with your own inner wisdom and discover what really feels right for you. Whether you come for a limited number of sessions or whether you embark on a longer journey of inner exploration, the aim of therapy is to regain balance and a feeling of well-being in life. This may be your first experience of counselling or you may have visited other therapists in the past; either way, the relationship with the therapist is key to the healing process and is created through mutual attunement and trust. Your issues are unique to you as is the narrative of your life. I will listen to your story with empathy and respect and together we will try and make sense of your dilemmas.
About me
My focus in life has always been the dynamics of interpersonal relationships. After studying modern languages and working for a time abroad I trained as a speech and language therapist at Central School of Speech and Drama and worked in the NHS with neurologically impaired adults and children with severe developmental language delay. Subsequently I worked with children with specific learning difficulties and began my psychotherapy training at CCPE in early retirement. A search for answers and meaning in my own life has brought me to where I am now and it is a persistent curiosity which sustains my love for this work.
As an integrative therapist I draw on four main perspectives in my work:
Psychodynamic principles for early childhood issues
Humanistic ideas for relationship dynamics and connection
Existential thinking which looks to the meaning and purpose in life
Transpersonal soul work which focuses on "who I really am"
"The one thing you have that nobody else has is you - your voice, your mind, your story, your vision." Neil Gaiman (author)
