My Approach

I bring a combination of systemic and humanistic approches to my therapeutic work. By systemic I am referring to everyone and everything being connected in some way, and this draws me to focus on relationships and the interactions taking place within them, including the old and new roles that are being expressed. By humanistic I think of therapy as basically involving the empowerment or expansion of a person's existing positive functioning rather than the pathologising of their coping or framgneting functioning. In this task the therapist follows the client's story about their lives and collaborates with them to co-create new understandings and solutions that lead to the client fulfilling their purpose for coming to therapy. Therapy then becomse a shared journey of new discoveries for both client and therapist.

About Me

I am a New Zealander living in the UK and an experienced individual, couple, family and group psychotherapist. I live and work in Stourbridge in the West Midlands and work in-person and online from my home office on Bell Vue (road) in Wordsley. I have been self-employed since 2005 and specialise in psychodramatic action methods and in group work leadership training. I am willing to work with anyone who is seeking therapeutic assistance with some issue in their life.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Couple therapy is an important resource for any couple who are facing a situation where they are stuck and need help to deal with or resolve a difficult situation. It is different to individual or family therapy because it is shared with an exclusive other, your partner, the person you are in relationship with who is the only other person in that relationship (unless having other people in that relationship is part of the problem). The couple therapist is then the 3rd party in the couple work who seeks to steer the boat evenly, not leaning too far towards one person's point of view without consideration for the others. This is a creative process for all involved. Old certainties or expectations are challenged, and new dynamics are negotiated that both people recognise as being necessary for the good of them both. And sometimes finding agreement is not possible and a division remains unresolved for reasons that are important to one or both of the couple.
Family therapy involves people who think of themselves as family, whether they are related by blood or not, They meet together with me to discuss what they want to change in their family. Sometimes they want to change relationships, like when there is conflict or bad feelings between family members. Sometimes they want to get through difficult circumstances, like when there has been an accident, illness, or some other external cause of distress. We hear from everyone about what they think and feel about the family's situation. Often family members then come up with new ideas, new things to say, new ways of seeing what is going on, and they can then take it from there by making changes in their daily lives. Sometimes complex problems need further input and other family members or community resources, like a GP, a teacher, a friend, or a specialist helper, is invited to assist us to achieve the goals the family have set themselves. The work is dynamic, and the outcomes are often surprising and pleasing and reflect the inherent strengthens of a particular family.
Trauma takes many forms and over the years I have met hundreds of these in my therapeutic practice. Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress are a reflection of a person's body and mind coping to survive a trauma. Healing the effects of these trauma responses is a journey from the loss of freedom to liberation and enpowerment. It is a different journey for each person, though their pathways are similar. Those paths lead to the repair and restoration of dignity to those parts of oneself that have been violated in some way.
I have been a supervisor since 2000 and have been accredited as such by the Australian Family Therapy Association. I offer supervision to anyone working in a social service setting, from students to managers, and all levels and positions inbetween. I conduct one-to-one and group supervision either in-person or online. I have 30-years of experience working with a wide variety of relational and mental health clients, dealing with the ethics of professional practice and personal responsibility. During supervision sessions I often utilise action methods drawn from psychodrama and reflective approches drawn from family therapy, such as mirroring, role reversal, internalised other interviewing, and therapeutic letter writing.
I regularly offer training in group work leadership either in-person or online. These Group Work Intensives take place in-person over 4 consecutive days or online for half a day once per week for 8 weeks, The next online training takes place during April and May 2024.
