We all face times when we feel stuck, in despair or overwhelmed. I believe that the therapeutic relationship can harness the body/mind’s profound ability to self-heal. It can help bring awareness to the way the brain behaves under stress and in response to trauma. In therapy, self-awareness and self-compassion are essential to the healing process, as is ‘detoxing’ from shame. I believe that even in the most stuck of places there lies the seed of transformation.
A guiding principle for my work is that a safe space and a trusting relationship is the crucible for this transformation. I know myself that it takes courage indeed to look at the parts of ourselves that we most fear; but the counselling process supports the client to work at their own pace.
Common issues I work with include: childhood abuse and trauma, loss and bereavement, attachment and relationships, including the modern ‘blended’ family, difficulties with intimacy and problematic ways of relating to others and ourselves. Sympmtoms you might be experiencing could be depression, anxiety, addictions, relationship problems, eating disorders, low self-esteem, trauma, bereavement, bullying, fears and stress. I also work with issues relating to loss of meaning and shifts in identity during life stage transitions. I hold an anti-racist, LGBTQIA+ affirmative stance, and am open to difference in all its manifestations. I am LGBTIQ+ positive, and offer affirmative counselling for trans and gender non-conforming people.
Fees: 50 minute sessions are £70. I have some concessions for trainees and for those who otherwise would not be able to access therapy.
I trained in integrative psychotherapy at the Metanoia Institute in London and am an Integrative Psychotherapist accredited by the UKCP and have been in private practice since 2017. I am working towards registration as a Counselling Psychologist and I am a member of the British Psychological Society. For over 15 years I worked in the NHS, in community mental health teams, psychological research and development and latterly as a psychological therapist. I have worked as an honorary psychotherapist for the NHS, for St Joseph’s Hospice, Hackney and in the voluntary sector in Brighton and Hove.
I hold full professional indemnity insurance.
I am also a lecturer in Counselling Psychology at the University of Brighton. My academic interests are in critical approaches to mental health practice and theory, specifically relational psychotherapy, community and clinical psychology.
