There are as many reasons to seek therapy as there are individuals exploring this option. For many therapy is an essential support in a time of personal crisis, upheaval, loss or bereavement. For others an underlying sense of confusion, unhappiness or dissatisfaction has gradually become a feeling that can no longer be ignored. The sense of isolation these feelings can leave us with can keep us from moving forward.
The therapeutic space offers a safe and confidential refuge. It is a place which provides an opportunity to reflect, to consider and to explore both our current ways of relating to the world and new directions we might take. By gaining insight into our own thoughts and behaviours we can gain the confidence and resilience to take control of our lives.
Essential to the experience of therapy is the relationship with a supportive and trusted therapist which, evidence confirms, is the primary determinant of successful therapeutic outcomes. What these might be for you is part of a joint exploration, but to begin the process I offer one or two sessions to consider the issues you wish to bring. This enables you to assess whether you feel comfortable with me, and for us both to establish whether the therapy I offer could be beneficial to you. Though ultimately rewarding, starting therapy can be daunting. I am happy to discuss any concerns or questions you may have in an initial phone conversation.
My approach is predominantly informed by a psycho-dynamic model of therapy which stresses the importance of understanding the narratives we have about ourselves in a secure, collaborative and non-judgemental setting. I am a fully qualified therapist with 20 years’ experience. My original training was at the Minster Centre and I have since pursued further training at the Centre for Stress Management and the Tavistock Institute. As well as running a private practice, I have worked in a variety of settings including hospitals, health clinics, schools, employee assistance programmes, young people’s counselling agencies (as part of CAMHS). I have also managed and delivered a critical incident debriefing service providing on-site therapeutic interventions following severe trauma. Aside from my therapeutic work, I also offer parenting skills training classes.
