My Approach

Clients usually begin with an initial half hour conversation to see if we are a 'good fit' for one another and to make the practical arrangements for sessions. This is usually followed by and assessment session to outline what we are going to work on and will include some broader questions about your well being and will include an assessment of risk and general well being. The focus is to gather information and is an opportunity for us to begin to get to know one another and for me to learn what you want from the sessions.

Sessions last for 50 minute and are usually weekly.

I offer both in person sessions currently in Whitehaven, Ravenglass and Holmrook (other locations are possible) and on-line sessions.

About Me

I am a psychodynamic, integrative psychotherapist with Transactional Analysis (TA) as my core model.

I work with adults in West Cumbria.

Psychotherapy can help us learn more about ourselves, and support us as we develop and grow through the challenges life sends our way. A professional perspective and a space of deep listening is often useful to help us navigate our way to a new start, whether we have a specific issue we would like to work through or we want a space to explore some changes we would like to make.

The psychodynamic approach means that the influence of the past, particularly early experience, in shaping a client's current reality is a crucial part of the work we will do together. TA is a practical way of understanding ourselves that places both the therapeutic relationship and the individual drive for growth and creativity at the centre of the process.

I work with a wide variety of people and presenting needs and have a growing interest in neurodiversity, particularly the intersection of neurodiversity and intergenerational trauma. Attendance at a recent series of seminars by Dr Tanya Banfield has enhanced my practice in this area.

I am a registered member of the BACP, the UKCP, DBS cleared, ICO registered, insured and have regular 1:1 supervision.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Neurodiversity in general is a growing area of interest for me. In particular how neurodiversity and trauma interact across generations. it seems to me to be the frontline in developing understanding of how brains work, a place where neurobiology, genetics, environment, nurture, attachment and attunement all come together in unique ways that we are only just beginning to understand.
Another strong theme in my therapy practice is working with anxiety. I am currently working on how all the different models we can use to understand anxiety come together to help a client become more grounded and less anxious. There are interactions with trauma, neurodiversity personality adaptations and of particular interest is OCD as a solution to anxiety.
Particularly how past trauma impacts our lives now, and what we can do about these impacts so we can grow and develop as people. Trauma can mean many things, from a one off catastrophic event to a series of smaller happenings that cause us to feel unsafe. Especially complex is trauma that happened when we were very young, maybe even before we were born. Understanding the impact of this in the here and now of adult clients and what to do to help is a growing area of my practice at the moment
