Are you suffering from low mood and depression that you can't shake off? Or perhaps you have recently suffered a bereavement or relationship breakdown that you are struggling to come to terms with. Your relationship with your partner or your family may be worrying you. You may be suffering from stress at work or anxiety and panic attacks that are making it difficult to get on with your life. Or perhaps you are feeling stuck in a rut and want to understand why and what to do about it.
If this sounds familiar then as an experienced psychotherapist and counsellor I can help you. I offer a safe, supportive, non-judgemental environment in which you can express and explore your feelings, understand more about their origins and connect them to both your past and present situation. Do get in touch so that we can talk about what is troubling you and how I can help you.
I offer short and long term therapy and work collaboratively with both individuals and couples to:
- explore and make sense of their difficult experiences
- come to terms with losses they have borne or are facing
- help them to acknowledge, regulate and express to others the difficult emotions that come with these
- become more aware of their unhelpful patterns of thinking, behaving and relating to others or each other
- gain an understanding of how to change these patterns in order to form more meaningful and authentic relationships and live more fulfilling lives
Individual counselling: I work with a range of presentations including depression, anxiety, stress, bereavement, self-esteem and relationship difficulties. I am particularly interested in working with clients through periods of transition, where questions of self-identity are important, for example adjusting to parenthood, redundancy or relationship loss.
Couples counselling: I work with couples at various stages of difficulty in their relationship, helping them to communicate more effectively, identify narratives in the relationship which may be getting in the way of how they relate to each other and finding new ways to connecting more intimately and authentically.
I believe that therapy is a collaborative process; my role is not to “fix” but to facilitate understanding and awareness and to empower clients to make new choices. In my work I draw on a number of models and approaches (Transactional Analysis, humanistic, psychodynamic, attachment theory) to understand each person's present difficulties in the context of their own experience. I have worked with both young and elderly clients from a diverse range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds as well as LGBT clients. I welcome enquiries from all communities.
My own experience of therapy to help with stress and depression led me to pursue my training in this area. Prior to this I spent 20 years in the corporate sector and I am able to use my own first-hand experience of the stresses and challenges of that environment in my work with clients.
