My Psychotherapy Career: Navigating the challenges of starting a private practice

How can a psychotherapist overcome the hurdles in establishing their client base in a new location?

In this episode, Helen Willingham, Head of Content and Engagement, talks to UKCP psychotherapist Alessio Rizzo. He looks at his career and how, he utilised his teaching and technical knowledge, along with his passion for writing, to build up his private practice.

‘I am not originally from the UK, so throughout my training all my UK colleagues, the ones who had lived here for a long time, they had ties with the community already, they knew their GP for a long time. And they would say as soon as they hired a room, or they had a practice, they would have people coming their way through recommendation or word of mouth. And that didn’t really apply to me. As a matter of fact, only Italian people contacted me at the beginning. It was kind of difficult beginning to be honest.’
