My Approach

I offer an introductory 30 minute session at no cost so that we can meet each other and discuss what you would like from therapy and whether my approach can meet your needs at the time. I will ask you questions about what your goals are from therapy and you are welcome to ask me about the way I work. I have always felt that regardless of training and experience the most likely way that therapy will be useful is that you as client/s feel there's a good " fit" between us and that a relationship of trust and confidence can develop between us. I believe that we are all influenced either consciously or subconsciously by our historical family relationships, beliefs and experiences and I will usually start my work with a family tree which is used to look at patterns, alliances, beginnings, endings and loss within the family.
After the initial introductory session if you feel you would like us to work together we can agree a convenient time for regular weekly sessions which can be reviewed at regular intervals to ensure you can voice how you feel the work is going.

About Me

I am a UKCP accredited Systemic Family Therapist and have worked for over twenty years offering therapy for individuals, couples and families. I have worked within organisations specialising in trauma work, relationships, sexual assault and historical sexual abuse, bereavement and loss. I have also worked within higher educational settings with students and within CAMHS with young people struggling with mental health, eating disorders, self harm, relationship problems, anxiety, depression, migration and cultural issues. I have trained in Humanistic and Systemic models and now use an integration of my training which puts you the client at the heart of work.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Bereavement and loss is a part of life that it's hard to accept sometimes and the busy pace of life can leave little time to reflect on the impact of loss which can be traumatic and long lasting. The loss of partners, children, parents, home, career or ability can be devastating. Loss and bereavement can give a sense of powerlessness and hopelessness for the future. Grief can bring a changed sense of self and identity that is hard to understand or accept and the opportunity to explore this change in a safe environment can be therapeutically useful.
We are all in relationship with our partners, families, friends, work colleagues and communities whether these relationships are working well or otherwise. Individuals, couples and families are under many extreme pressures in these difficult times we live in and it may be that you are considering therapy to improve or better understand yourself and your relationships with others. Problems that occur in the present are often influenced by what has happened to us in the past that has not been fully resolved or understood. Therapy can help you better challenge your repeating patterns and choose options for a healthy future.
I have worked for over twenty years with women, men and young people who have experienced historical and current sexual abuse. One of the most frequent impacts of sexual abuse is post traumatic shock syndrome ( PTSD) and this can have devastating effects on mental wellbeing, relationships, trust and parenting. Anxiety, nightmares, flashbacks and avoidance related to sexual assault and abuse can be difficult to manage day to day and have a longterm effect on your relationships with others around you including partners, children, and other close family members. Sexual abuse can be held secret for many years due to the desire to protect other family members, therapy can offer a safe confidential space to think about your own experience and feelings , putting yourself first . I can offer support to think about the legal process if this is something you choose to do and signpost you to support available through that process.
