My Approach

When you contact me initially I will walk you through some of the options and if we decide to work together I will meet you (or you and your family/significant people in your life) ‘where you are’ in life. We may decide to focus on getting a better understanding of the ways that your early experiences have influenced the ways you perceive the world and relate to people around you. We may focus purely on the present and your goals for the future. Based on your circumstances we may decide to do some time limited or long term therapy.

We can be curious together about how one of multiple aspects of lived experience such as your age, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender, religion, marital or civil partnership status may be affecting the way that you perceive the world around you and the way that you may be perceived by others. I work in a collaborative way so I will invite you to let me know if I get things wrong.

About Me

I am a dually qualified Family and Systemic Psychotherapist and psychoanalytically informed Music Therapist. I completed my Family and Systemic Psychotherapy Training in the Tavistock Centre, a world-renowned centre for the treatment of children and adults with emotional difficulties. Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

A diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) may be a cathartic moment in our lives as it can help us make sense of who we are and help us to communicate times when we may need additional support from those around us. A diagnosis can be a punctuation in our lives and we may have complicated feelings around this, especially around how this might be experienced or understood by others. I will help you to think about your lived experience of ASC and the relationship between this and other difficulties in your life. ASC can be a strength in many ways and I will help you think about what positive things it brings to your life. I can help families to think about diagnosis and meaning within the family context, finding ways to support the family member with their difficulties. Some people may experience traits but not meet the diagnostic threshold. We can work together to make sense of this within the context of your life. I have worked with adults and young people who have a diagnosis of ASC and I have found it rewarding to help them overcome a wide range of social and emotional difficulties. I have learnt a lot about their experience of the diagnosis, which has then informed my practice.
Working out who we are and our place in the world is a complex process and sometimes how we imagine ourselves is in contrast to how others experience us. I will help you to think about how you have been shaped by your family, country of origin, education, work, geographical area where we live along with aspects of our lives such as our gender, sexuality, religion, culture, ethnicity, ability (or disability). There are additional complexities for individuals who may be neurodiverse or are experiencing long term physical or mental health conditions. In addition to that often trauma impacts on the ways in which we see ourselves and relate to others.
I have worked with both children and adults who were facing a wide variety of conditions including depression, anxiety, trauma, phobias, eating disorders, suicidal ideation. I have experience of working with the person but also the wider family to support recovery. Having a family member with a mental health issue can be distressing to the family and the person and I am committed to helping you to work through difficulties at a pace that suits you. It can be very difficult to talk about mental illness due to the stigma and narratives around it. We can find a language that will allow us to explore your experience on your own terms.
Families are the greatest resource to a young person who is experiencing emotional difficulties. Our intention as parents is to have our child’s best interest at heart but when we are close to an issue we are not always able to take a step back and make sense of what might be going on for the child. I can help you untangle what might be going on for the young person also be appreciating of your experience of them as their parents. I am particularly interested in working with parents who are separated/separating and I am passionate about helping manage the transition and promote ongoing parental communication. Becoming a parent can take many forms and come with different complexities. I have worked with birth parents, step parents, foster parents, adoptive parents and same sex parents.
Life can be complicated and many unexpected events can happen outside of our control which can leave us feeling distressed and hurt. Each person’s experience of trauma is different as it can come in multiple forms, for example accidents, abuse, bullying and loss. Healing from these experiences can often be a painful and difficult process. I can help you sensitively to think about these experiences, the meaning they have in your life and how this may shape you. Sometimes painful memories can hold us back in having our needs met by others around us. Its important that we pay attention to this to ensure that the long term impact of trauma to hold you back in harmful ways.
