About Me

Karen offers counselling, psychotherapy and EMDR therapy online at the moment, due to the coronavirus situation. Her practice is based in London W2 (Paddington), and London SW1 (Victoria). She specialises in psychological trauma including PTSD and complex PTSD, also depression, anxiety, medically unexplained symptoms, relationship issues, stress and personal crisis.

She graduated from The Centre For Counselling and Psychotherapy Education, which is the largest training college in the UK for transpersonal and integrative therapy. Her MA is in Jungian and Post-Jungian Studies and she is currently reading for an MSc in Psychological Trauma. Earlier in 2017, Karen completed an EMDR Europe accredited training in EMDR therapy. This is a wonderful treatment for psychological trauma, including acute stress disorder, PTSD and complex trauma arising from abuse or neglect in childhood or adulthood. In addition, EMDR is effective for a number of other conditions such as anxiety, phobias, complicated grief, types of physical pain that have a psychological component (e.g. phantom limb pain), addictions, OCD, and others.

Karen has wide experience in both short and long-term work with adult clients. In addition to depth psychotherapy and EMDR therapy, she also sees clients for counselling in the event of emotional crisis related to stress, anxiety, or trauma. Crisis counselling is short-term, and very practical, aiming to support the person and help them regain their adaptive coping capacity. Sometimes it leads into longer-term therapy, but this is by no means always the case. Often people just need a helping hand at a critical time and they may not want or need psychotherapy.

Karen's approach to client work is relational and holistic. This means she actively engages with her clients and talks with them as well as listens to them. It also means the client is respected as a whole person within their own context – in terms of personal relationships, family, friends, social life, work situation, home and finances, cultural background, and so on.

All of Karen's work is grounded in the person-centred core conditions – congruence or genuineness of the therapist, unconditional positive regard for the client, and empathic understanding. She is strongly influenced by psychodynamics and Jungian psychology, but works cognitively or with the unconscious as appropriate. Experiential work such as dream analysis, guided visualisations, drawing, and other creative techniques may be included from time to time. Holding the transpersonal worldview means she respects any spiritual or religious interests a client may have. For clients who don’t have such interests, that is equally fine and respected.

Karen’s special interests are depression and anxiety, somatisation and medically unexplained symptoms (MUS), relationship issues, personal crisis, and the many manifestations of stress and psychological trauma. In particular, she has wide experience of working with survivors of complex trauma resulting from child abuse and neglect, and has a special interest in bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder. Karen also works one-to-one and with groups to facilitate self-development and personal growth from a transpersonal perspective.

It is possible to have more than one session a week when clinically indicated, either temporarily or as a regular arrangement.
