My Approach

Awareness of the way we relate in the session is an essential aspect of my work, both as an indicator of how the client manages daily interactions and relationships, and as a medium for change and healing. In addition, an understanding of the client's history and background is important as a backdrop to present circumstances and concerns, often illuminating the meaning of recent and here and now experience.

About Me

I have worked as a psychotherapist since 1988, mainly in private practice, and including eight years in a GP practice. I trained and qualified as a Gestalt psychotherapist at the Gestalt Psychotherapy Training Institute (GPTI) and am an accredited member of UKCP. My approach emphasises relationship as a major factor in wellbeing and in healing painful residues from the past. I think it is crucially important to create a therapy setting which is supportive, understanding and honest. By exploring together the sources of unhappiness in past and present experience, it is possible to identify patterns that are counterproductive or redundant, and find new ways forward. My aim is to help you to become aware of aspects of yourself not fully realised, so that your range of possible choices is increased along with your ability to respond creatively to each situation.
I have 34 years' experience of helping people recover from stress, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, abuse and the effects of physical and psychological trauma, and have worked extensively with those going through major life transitions, such as bereavement, divorce, retirement and redundancy. For those in crisis, I may be able to offer an appointment at short notice.

I support my practice with regular supervison , training workshops and presentations, and reading. My personal interests and friendships are an essential component, nurturing creativity, connection and understanding.
My practice area includes the South Downs, Brighton, Horsham, Billingshurst, Arundel, Storrington, Worthing, and Shoreham-by-Sea. I also work on line, and occasionally by phone if needed.

Fee reductions may be available for trainees and those on low income.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

As I personally face the challenge of aging, I bring a heightened awareness of this which informs my work.
My approach to depression is to investigate with the client what aspects of her/himself are not being given space to be lived fully, and to encourage their emergence and expression, for example in work, relationship, creative outlets.
In working with the prospect and the aftermath of relationship rupture and ending, I attempt both to support the client through a painful process and to seek out creative ways of moving into a new and unfamiliar phase of life, which may involve drawing on untapped and potentially exciting resources in us both.
I am available for supervision of counsellors and therapists (qualified and in training).
I am experienced in working with the results of physical and psychological trauma, including early abuse, abandonment and neglect. Boarding school experience has been one focus of my practice for some years.
