My Approach

How Gillian works and who she can help
Gillian is registered as an Integrative Psychotherapist and works with adult, couple relationships, adolescent, group and family therapy and career consulting.
Integrative psychotherapy works with the whole person taking into consideration the body, mind, emotions and familial, social and cultural context of the individual.
She will aim to explore a broad range of influences throughout the lifespan to assist the client to develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their relationship to others and to society. There will be an exploration of both the internal and external world of the client and the interaction between the two. There are a range of different therapeutic approaches which can be employed depending on the issues and age of the client.
Integrative psychotherapy places emphasis on the confidential relationship developed between the therapist and client, with both actively engaged in the exploration of difficulties the client may be facing, the focus and direction of the therapy and the evaluation of the outcomes. Therapy may be short or longer-term and the duration will be agreed with the client.
Gillian will maintain a non-judgemental, analytic, open minded curiosity towards the client, recognising that there are multiple truths and perspectives which are subjectively interpreted by each of us.
Through open and honest dialogue, the client will be encouraged to develop the ability to take responsibility for themselves, the way they think and reflect, their future direction in life and how life events change and shape them but more importantly, how they choose to adapt to life’s challenges.
Clients often wonder how therapy can be helpful to them and whether it is right for them. Gillian always suggests that the client tries a few sessions and then they can decide whether they feel at ease, feel comfortable being open with her and want to continue what is always a very personal and subjective experience.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anxiety can affect you both physically and mentally. You might feel restless, unable to concentrate, panicky, a sense of foreboding or in some cases have serious physical side effects such as difficulty breathing normally, feeling dizzy or very scared. There are many causes of anxiety but it is very treatable with psychotherapy and best to reach out for help as soon as possible before symptoms become entrenched.
Bereavement describes the loss when someone significant in our life dies. But there are other losses such as the end of a relationship, a home or a job for example. The feelings can be severe and similar. This can result in a feeling of shock and numbness, overwhelming grief, wanting to cry or perhaps feeling terribly sad but unable to cry, exhaustion and difficulty sleeping, or feelings of guilt or anger about ourselves or our loved one. Although it is a normal human response, it can still feel difficult to cope with. Psychotherapy can assist on the path to acceptance.
Anyone who has had a diagnosis of cancer themselves or for a loved one will understand how frightening, disorienting and sad it can feel. We tend rightly, to be very focused on the relevant treatment plans, but seeking emotional support for yourself or loved ones can make the journey a little easier.
Depression differs from low mood when you feel persistently sad and down for weeks or months. With some help and support it is very possible to recover. Many difficult life changing events can cause it but in some cases you may not be sure of the underlying cause. It is best to seek help sooner rather than later and be on your way to a happier and more productive life.
Mental health issues can affect anybody and at any time. There are many and can range from eating disorders, depression, stress, panic disorders, bereavement difficulties and anxiety to the more unusual disorders such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. By finding a psychotherapist, you can be helped to identify your particular mental health problem and then receive the appropriate care to assist you in returning to a better life.
