My Approach

My approach is described as Relational Transactional Analysis. TA was developed in the USA in the 1950ies and 60ies as an approach similar to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, as an alternative (or precursor) to psychoanalysis. It has since evolved into a very integrative model, which draws on psychoanalytic thought and includes CBT methodology, while placing the therapeutic relationship at the heart of the treatment.

About Me

I have worked as a psychotherapist and psychologist for almost 30 years and specialise in the treatment of trauma (both single incident, as well as developmental trauma) and all life transitions and existential crises. I have extensive experience in working with people with gender dysphoria.
I work relationally, which means that the therapeutic relationship is central to the work, and 'techniques' are secondary.
I do not work with manualised approaches, and tailor the direction of the treatment according to an individual's needs and requests. All work is agreed on in a collabirative way.

I work with

  • Couples
  • Individuals
  • Private healthcare referrals

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

As we age we have to come to terms with changes in our physical as well as mental 'base lines'. It is important to allow ourselves to accept those changes and explore their potential, as well as live with their limitations.
EMDR provides a tool which helps with single-incident as well as, to an extent, developmental trauma. It is not a panacea for everything and sometimes other approaches are more appropriate, but we can explore this together.
PTSD can be the result of unresolved trauma, both single incident as well as developmental. Depending on the issues a client faces, the treatment of symptoms takes precedence (for example with EMDR) or the integration of events into their narrative, coming to terms with what happened and finding a place within one's life story.
While not being transgender myself, I have developed a keen interest, and extensive experience in working with, gender dysphoria, including people who are considering, have had, or decided not to have, reassignment surgery. I continue to learn from clients regarding their own specific reasons for choosing what is right for them and hope to assist them with making their decision, as well as supporting them with whatever choice they made.
I have a special interest both in the treatment of single incident as well as developmental trauma, which is the result of long term neglect and/or abuse. Every client experiences their trauma differently and there is no 'one size fits all' treatment. We will need to look at the meaning of the trauma together and find a way to make sense of it, and to alleviate any lasting symptoms that impinge on current relationships.
