My Approach

As an existential psychotherapist, my understanding of living is informed by philosophy. We have the freedom of choice but with that comes responsibility which at times can seem too much to bear. Sometimes, it seems easier to turn away from what is happening but that can lead to a sense of anxiety and uncertainty because we are avoiding important choices and decisions. Our relationships are at the heart of who we are, so exploring our connections to others can help to clarify aspects of ourselves. Together we can explore your values, assumptions, and meanings to see what is working for you, and what might need adapting. I can be your companion on this journey; I listen with understanding and without judgement. I see individuals for both short term and open -ended therapy, you decide.
My private practice is in North London, within walking distance of West Hampstead and Finchley Road tube stops and there is free street parking for one hour outside the therapy rooms.

About Me

I am an experienced existential psychotherapist which means that I focus on how we choose to live, how we deal with anxiety and uncertainty, and what is happening in our relationships. I have had eight years experience within the NHS, as well as three years as clinical lead within a GP surgery. I have experience in both short term, goal oriented therapy and long term therapy. As well as my private practice, I am an associate lecturer in psychotherapy and counselling at Regent's University. I have also held senior roles in the corporate world so understand many of the stresses and strains of the workplace and the challenges of striking a work/life balance.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

As an existential therapist, facing our mortality is an integral part of living life. The better we can deal with ageing and death, the more satisfying and meaningful is our living.
Anxiety is an inevitable part of being human because there are so many things in life that we cannot control, but sometimes it can be overwhelming, for example when life starts living us rather than the other way round. Facing the challenges of life, not avoiding them, can seem a daunting prospect but it helps in being a master of life and not a victim.
Depression and sadness can descend when life stops having meaning and the effort of participating just does not seem worth it any longer. Sometimes sadness is the result of a very unhappy experience, such as loss or relationship difficulties, then taking time out to show compassion to ourselves, to feel heard and understood, is important. Examining long held values and assumptions is also useful because sometimes these can keep us feeling stuck when what is needed is a more realistic and functioning approach to life.
Our relationships and how we feel about them is a determining factor in how we feel about ourselves. Sometimes we can get stuck in patterns of relating that no longer serve our needs but it can seem easier to keep the status quo than to risk rejection, rupture or worse. It is in confronting the difficulties of family life that we can feel fulfilled and satisfied again. Burying our needs can only lead to resentment and misunderstanding.
Obsessions are a way of deflecting pain. It is easier to worry about the improbable or the unimportant than face the reality of hurt and pain. When we feel happy and contented the niggles of life are invisible. In therapy you can learn about what is meaningful about certain obsessions and what they are hiding. It takes courage to confront difficult aspects of living but in therapy you can learn how to live a more satisfying life, one that does not need the enslavement of obsession.
