Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Transitioning through life as we age, many of us struggle with change, especially as the prompt for a change can catch us unawares or be traumatic. I can help you to come to terms with changed circumstances such as bereavement, the forming or dissolution of relationships, changed or lost employment, and ‘empty nest syndrome’ – the perfectly natural feelings of grief and loneliness parents or guardians experience when their children first leave home.
Each of us experiences grief in our own way and at our own pace. There is no set pattern and it will be a while before we can accept what has happened and begin to settle into a new rhythm of life. Grief is as much a part of life as love and joy, and it can, in its way, be an enriching experience. I can help you to come to terms with your loss and discover in the process that having survived such a devastating event as the death of a loved one, you are stronger than you knew. This in turn can leave you better prepared to cope with other losses in your life.
Are you considering coming to therapy because you feel dissatisfied and believe there must be more to life? Perhaps, although life is going fairly well, you feel that you’re not fulfilling your potential. Or maybe you compare yourself unfavourably to others, distracted by whether their grass is greener and whether you should try a new type of work or find a new relationship. I can help you identify and work towards your goals.
Our relationships with people – parents, children, friends, partners, colleagues – are an essential aspect of what it is to be human and key to our wellbeing. When our relationships go well, they give us a secure sense of self and can open us up to new experiences and the potential of what life has to offer. By contrast, troublesome relationships can make us feel insecure, often angry, and lead to us becoming withdrawn and lonely. Talking to me about your relationships, past or present, can help you understand what’s gone wrong and why. Then, with my support, you can discover alternative and better ways of relating.
You may be seeking therapy because external events have brought you to a crisis point in your life. Whatever the precipitating factors may have been, my first priority will be to assist in alleviating the crisis and associated feelings.
