I was trained in the Existential approach to psychotherapy, which will help you to understand the repetitive patterns or themes in your life that keep you fixed in unhappy or unhealthy relationships, or areas of your life that you may feel stuck or anxious and confused about. Meaning making and the struggle with ‘Angst’ or Anxiety are central themes of Existential psychotherapy, and I will help you identify new ways of approaching and coping with your experience. You will be able to reflect, and ask yourself the difficult questions that help you understand the life problems and struggles that bring you to therapy. I work integratively and will adjust the therapy to suit your needs and personal situation, which means I may include Cognitive therapy, Psychodynamic theory, Trauma therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy.
Existential psychotherapy fits well with the sudden life changing experience of trauma and traumatic loss because when faced with tragedy and despair, we often question the meaning and purpose of our lives, questioning such deeply personal questions such as, How can I survive? Is life worth living? Can I find meaning again without my loved one? What’s the point of life?
The human mind and spirit have an incredible capacity for resilience and self-healing. However, during times of crisis, and periods of change, your psychological resilience is severely impaired. It takes courage to ask for help and seek support from a therapist, but in a safe and empowering therapeutic relationship it is possible to learn different ways to face life, survive change, and heal from crisis and loss, which I can help you to understand and grow from.
Hello, I am an Existential psychotherapist trained at the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling in London. I have experience working in a time limited counselling model in Adult Mental Health Services in the NHS; and several years’ experience working in a longer term therapy model in community based charities with adults and young people in London, Hertfordshire and Somerset.
I work with adults and young people in the 16+ age group in person or remotely via video calls (Zoom or Skype) or telephone calls for 6-12 sessions (once a week for 50 minutes). Existential psychotherapy often works well when we have the opportunity to build a therapeutic relationship over time, which means I am happy to work with you long term.
I completed my Doctoral research at Middlesex University in London, and my area of research was a Phenomenological study of traumatic bereavement in adults. Phenomenology means I focused on the ‘lived experience’ of adults who experienced a sudden, unexpected loss of a loved one in traumatising circumstances, including for example, death by suicide; road traffic accidents; drownings, and sudden death in children. I am currently training as an eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) therapist, which is a natural progression from my background working with complex trauma in the NHS. I am developing my practice to help support clients heal and recover from trauma and rebuild their lives, in order to pursue new life experiences and healthy relationships.
Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.
