Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

While treatment for ADHD often involves medication, counselling can play a huge part in helping people come to terms with their diagnosis and cope with how the condition impacts on their lives.
Anxiety is a feeling of worry or fear that is a normal response to a range of different situations. It can affect your mental health when you feel anxious every day and can’t remember when you last felt relaxed. Counselling can help you explore the cause of these feelings, understand them and suggest ways of dealings with situations. A counsellor can help you learn how to cope with anxiety.
Bereavement describes the sense of loss and grief we feel after the death of someone we care about. It’s normal to experience a range of emotions, including anger, sadness, loneliness, guilt and anxiety during bereavement. But there’s no right or wrong way to feel. It affects people in different way Working through your feelings with a therapist can help you come to terms with your loss.
One in 13 young people in England and Wales experiences PTSD by the age of 18, according to research released today. The Kings College London’s study of 2,232 18-year-olds found nearly a third experienced trauma in children, with a quarter going on to develop PTSD. Young people who developed PTSD were twice as likely as their peers to have a range of mental health disorders, the study published in the Lancet Psychiatry found. They were also at high risk of harm to themselves - half had self-harmed and one in five attempted suicide since age 12. People with PTSD suffer from a range of symptoms including: re-living traumatic events through distressing memories or nightmares; avoidance of anything reminding them of their trauma; feelings of guilt, isolation or detachment; and irritability, impulsivity or difficulty concentrating.
A blended family, or stepfamily, forms when two people make a life together with the children from one or both previous relationships – and possibly go on to have children in their new relationship. But it’s easy to forget that ‘when parents get divorced, a second divorce occurs between them and their children’. I counsel many teenagers from blended families. Although each situation is slightly different, and some aspects are similar, the teenage experience within the family can be particularly difficult.
