I will meet with you initially for either one or two sessions to get a sense as to whether we both feel we could work together in a way that will be the most beneficial for you. This will become apparent as we explore why you are seeking help at this time. If we both decide to proceed the next few sessions will involve my getting a sense of your background and history. After that the sessions will be led by your decision as to what we focus upon and speak about in more depth.
We will collaboratively decide whether it is short term work or a more open-ended commitment that is desired.
Since 1982 I have been working, one to one, as an individual psychotherapist and additionally since 1998 as a group psychotherapist. I also supervise the work of counsellors. I have run staff groups in the NHS and educational institutions as well as being involved in the training of students in the helping professions.
Psychotherapy provides a safe environment to reflect upon how the past may be impinging upon the present. Through this it may be possible to make different choices that hopefully improve the quality of your life.
Making changes in your way of thinking and living can be unsettling as well as potentially beneficial. Because of this change may be both desired and feared. For that reason I endeavour to treat each person sensitively and individually rather than in a formulaic way.
