My Approach

My Integrative practice, values and orientation have developed organically through over 40 years experience in mental health and substance misuse settings and private practice as well as through my training. I draw on a number of approaches including Object Relations and Attachment Theory from the Psychodynamic tradition, Transactional Analysis, Gestalt, Person Centred and Bodywork from a Humanistic perspective, and am informed by more recent developments in the field of Trauma and Neuroscience. I am more interested in connections than divisions between therapeutic approaches. Fostering and actively working with the Therapeutic Relationship is for me the central integrating principle of therapy.
I am happy to work with people who contact me directly, via referral from their GP or other professional or through a family member. A first session is an opportunity to see how we get on and ensure that we are both comfortable to make an agreement to work together. I regard emotional distress and difficulty as a normal part of life which sometimes needs addressing in a professional context. We are all potentially vulnerable and we all have our limits. Sometimes we get stuck in patterns of being and relating which are unhelpful to us and which we may need to express, understand and begin to change.

I have been solely in Private Practice since 1995, both in East Anglia and from 2002 in Swansea. This has incorporated GP surgery counselling, extensive experience with Employee Assistance Programmes and a universty staff counselling service, providing individual and group therapy for Womens Aid, receiving referrals from an Eating Disorders service, working with clients of a Probation Service on Drug Rehabilitation Orders and working with members of the Deaf Community via Interpreter.

My experience has taught me to be flexible and creative in my approach to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds. At the same time I am acutely aware of the commonalities we all share as human beings.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

I worked for four years as a therapist with a Community Drug team during the early 90s and have subsequently provided therapy for clients of Llanelli Probation Serice on Drug Treatment and Rehabiltation Orders. Over the years I have worked with numerous clients experiencing substance use issues within my private practice. I have developed training days in engaging with substance using clients from a Relational perspective, for a range of agencies. The dissertation for my original psychotherapy training was on an Object Realtions approach to working with substance use. My key premise is understanding substance use as a substitute for unmet relational needs.
I have specific and extensive experience, over an eleven year period, of working with a member of the Deaf Community, much of this via BSL/English interpreter. Together, the Interpreter and I also developed training days for therapists and for translators, and gave a presentation entitled 'Trust in Translation' (exploring the 3-way dynamics of this work) at two conferences.
I received psychotherapy referrals and provided groupwork for clients of Swansea Womens Aid over several years. Subsequently I provided supervision for staff of the service and ran training days on the dynamics of abusive relationships for a range of agencies. Abuse within relationships past and present, whether involving physical violence, sexual abuse or psychologically coercive control, remains a key theme for many of my clients.
