My Approach

I offer practical psychotherapy to remove emotional blocks and reconnect you with your true self.
I will invite you to talk about your experience of life. Where are you now? Where would you like to be? What needs to change? As we explore and reflect I will encourage you to notice any emotions and allow them to express themselves. I may suggest alternative perspectives, physical, or imaginative techniques to help the change happen.
The principles I embrace include: depth of change; speed of change; empowering teamwork; humour; energetic rapport; positivity; taking time; and flexibility.

About Me

Hi, my name is Richard. I help people understand themselves, express themselves, and feel better in themselves.
I have studied psychotherapy since 2002 and have been registered as a UKCP psychotherapist since 2008.
In my early life I trained as an engineer and worked as a management consultant until I had an emotional breakdown and experienced therapy for the first time. I was blown away!
Since then I have experienced, studied, and practiced many forms of therapy including NLP, metaphor therapy, hypnotherapy, plant medicines, and empathic energy work. I seek to integrate what works into an approach that is deeply spiritual while also being grounded and practical.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anger can be a destructive emotion that hurts us and the people around us. While it is important to acknowledge this I also see anger as an important and protective emotion that contains a lot of useful energy. My first strategy is usually to encourage clients to engage with and move that anger energy by finding ways to express it responsibly. As the anger is expressed it often reveals more vulnerable emotions that are often associated with being wronged in the past. To the extent that these wrongs can be discovered, confronted, and healed the less there is for our anger to protect and the more calm and relaxed we can become in our everyday lives.
Anxiety is a common complaint and can be crippling and uncomfortable. At some level anxiety is trying to protect you from bad things happening. Together we can release emotions from past difficult experiences, explore possible future worst case scenarios, equip you to manage them, and create the conditions for the anxiety to fall away.
Losing a loved one is always sad but sometimes the grief doesn't pass and we continue to miss them terribly. Together we can face the reality of the passing, reconnect with the memory of your loved one, work through any unfinished business between you and them, and create the conditions for a fond farewell.
Many of us didn't grow up in an ideally supportive and loving environment. While our parents may have been doing their best they may have been hampered by practical issues or the effects of their own childhood difficulties. We may try to put the past behind us but the underlying issues remain and we may even recreate them in our adult life. Together we can work to understand the family dynamics, re-connect with younger aspects of yourself, clear relationship blocks, and create a sense of the connection and safety that should have always been there.
Have you have been torn apart by an intense experience or a complex experiences over a long period? Trauma can leave us feeling dissociated and experiencing symptoms including flashbacks, anger, and anxiety. Together we can identify the traumatic memories, work through the emotion, and bring you back to yourself.
