My Approach

The general idea is to release any tensions and blockages in your body, disconnect you from anything that no longer serves you, and to clear the relationships between you and your family.

I like to start by asking you what you’ve been noticing in your everyday life, and how you’d like it to be different. As we talk there will probably be a moment when we touch on something that evokes an emotional response. This is our opportunity to go deeper.

As we transition from ‘talking about’ to ‘moving through’ I make much use of my intuition and energetic sensitivity to support and guide you towards things that you may have previously avoided or found difficult. Sometimes this may involve some intense emotions rising to the surface and being expressed in a safe and responsible way. At other times it can involve moving into a profound state of relaxation and contemplation.

Towards the end of many sessions we turn our attention towards the future. I usually suggest some simple homework to continue the transformation or embed the change.

For our work to be successful you will need to be honest, curious, and willing to experience bodily sensations.

About Me

Hi, my name is Richard. I help people face the things they most want to avoid and become free of the emotional “stuff” that is preventing them from being more comfortable in themselves and successful in life.

I’ve been working as a psychological coach since 2002 and as a registered psychotherapist since 2008. My style is a synthesis of no-nonsense talk therapy and approaches that engage more directly with your feelings and imagination. The work can be emotionally intense so I like to keep things relaxed and informal. Therapy can be serious without being somber!

Sessions are online and flexible to fit with your schedule. Most people choose 70 minutes over the standard 50 minute ‘therapy hour’.

In addition to my psychotherapy experience I have a Master's degree in Engineering, Economics, and Management from the University of Oxford and am currently reading for a Master's degree in Computer Science at the University of London. I'm interested in innovation - especially at the intersection of technology and mental health or human perception.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Anger can be a destructive emotion that hurts us and the people around us. While it is important to acknowledge this I also see anger as an important and protective emotion that contains a lot of useful energy. My first strategy is usually to encourage clients to engage with and move that anger energy by finding ways to express it responsibly. As the anger is expressed it often reveals more vulnerable emotions that are often associated with being wronged in the past. To the extent that these wrongs can be discovered, confronted, and healed the less there is for our anger to protect and the more calm and relaxed we can become in our everyday lives.
Anxiety is a common complaint and can be crippling and uncomfortable. At some level anxiety is trying to protect you from bad things happening. Together we can release emotions from past difficult experiences, explore possible future worst case scenarios, equip you to manage them, and create the conditions for the anxiety to fall away.
Losing a loved one is always sad but sometimes the grief doesn't pass and we continue to miss them terribly. Together we can face the reality of the passing, reconnect with the memory of your loved one, work through any unfinished business between you and them, and create the conditions for a fond farewell.
