My Approach

Many people experience emotional difficulties and it has a negative effect on their self-esteem. Psychotherapy offers a safe, confidential space where they can talk without interruption, free from others telling them what to do or how to feel. Listening in a non-judgmental way underscores everything I do. Perhaps you're feeling low, and you've reached a crossroads where life seems to offer little meaning for you. Maybe you're feeling overwhelmed and stuck, unable to see things clearly. There are so many reasons that drive people to seek help.
Therapy focuses on the psychological core of emotional suffering. Talking to a therapist can offer a window into how you form relationships and operate in the world. My aim is to help people better understand themselves and break from past behaviours so they can lead healthier, more rewarding lives. If this strikes a chord, get in touch.

About Me

I am a trained Psychodynamic Psychotherapist, which means my focus is helping clients deal with emotional challenges that often inhibit their quality of life. I work with clients to address harmful patterns of behaviour, so they are able to make better choices, leading to more fulfilling lives. I have a long history of pastoral care, from mentoring to counselling and psychotherapy in both public and private sectors. This has often involved working with clients who feel they have 'hit a wall', be it through trauma, depression, anxiety, isolation and a myriad of other reasons. I am a firm believer that growth and change can be achieved through the process of therapy.

Special Interests

Like all UKCP registered psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors I can work with a wide range of issues, but here are some areas in which I have a special interest or additional experience.

Of course, anxiety is something we all experience, however, if you’re in a pattern of continual anxiety, where your mind finds just about anything to panic about, you can be left with distressing bodily symptoms, stomach cramps, a racing heart, excessive sweating etc. If this has developed into panic attacks and is impacting your ability to cope with daily tasks, and feels like things are getting worse then get in touch. Anxiety can often develop into a default position where you ruminate and fixate on situations that previously seemed perfectly manageable. I work with my clients to understand the triggers that initiate these uncomfortable feelings and gain some perspective on their early experiences that may be informing this behaviour. This can help clients engage mind and body to both minimise and manage these feelings.
Depression is a complex condition, expected by the World Health Organisation to be the third cause of disability worldwide. It can manifest in feelings of sadness, worthlessness and hopelessness. My approach is to help you face the challenge of changing how you think and behave by building a relationship with you in therapy. In turn, this can help you better know yourself, be able to manage these thoughts and feelings and recognise your uniqueness in the world.
Your identity is essentially how you define yourself - who you believe yourself to be. Building a sense of identity is key to a person’s development. Our identity comprises elements like our gender, class, race, sexuality, spiritual belief system and ethnicity. We integrate our parents’ values, those of our peer group and the culture we are raised in. This helps shape who we are. At different maturational times, we may challenge or go against our identity, which is perfectly normal and part of human development. However, deeper problems may surface if we feel we do not possess a sufficient sense of identity or belonging. We may feel the value system that we grew up with does not reflect our authentic self. We may feel anxious and disconnected and be experiencing an identity crisis. This can manifest in low self-esteem, depression, imposter-syndrome and fears around forming close relationships with others. Such feelings tend to arise at pivotal life changes, from changing careers, leaving/moving home, divorce, bereavement and retirement. This may lead to self-reflection and the questioning of our values and initiate a search for meaning and purpose in our lives. This is normal and part and parcel of our continual self-evaluation as we move through life’s stages; however, it can also feel inhibiting and overwhelming, causing deep psychological distress and affect our functioning. This is where I work with clients to come to terms with who they are and to better understand and even challenge their self-perception and why it’s okay to both hold on to elements that are central to who they are and let go of others that act as barriers to their personal growth and happiness.
You may be experiencing difficulty with your partner, family or social and work relationships. The aforementioned are all complex and unique in their own way and are subject to the pressures and demands of modern life. Therapy enables you to come to an understanding of how you form relationships and where difficulties may arise, for example, poor communication or managing differences and behaviours. Of course, our relationship patterns are significantly influenced by our primary relationships in our early years. My approach is to help you unpick what is informing present behaviours and help you understand past experiences, allowing you to be better able to make positive changes.
